I've always been interested in Greta Garbo. She was not the most beautiful actress, and surely not the best actress, but there is something about her that's intriguing. Maybe it was the Swedish accent. Maybe it's a toughness and independence, which shows both on and off screen.

The bar scene from the movie Anna Christie, 1930. It was Garbo's first "Talkie" movie. The other woman in the bar is Marie Dressler. There was some speculation that her voice would not be appropriate for talking movies, but she was an instant hit.

Can't really comment on her - never seen one movie of her but I often heard that phrase 'I want to be alone'
and how I understand that ! We all need that alone time :)
She reminds me of Dietrich, the Mad-onna of her day :p although I would say Garbo was more subdued ……..

This picture shows a 'wretched' side to Garbo - wondered many times if she
    was a happy soul

A century after her birth, Greta Garbo's allure lives on (2005)

Garbo's involvement with [actor and often co-star John] Gilbert led her to discover that he was making $10,000 a week, while she was drawing only $400 a week. Stung by the salary disparity and tired of playing vamps, she went on strike.

MGM hinted darkly that Garbo's visa might not be renewed if she refused to work, but the 21-year-old actress did not back down.

"She said, `Fine, I'll go back to Europe,'" said Gray Reisfield, Garbo's niece. "And she would have. She got a much higher salary and her choice of leading men. I don't know of many people at that age who would stand up to Louis B. Mayer."

Her new contract was for $5,000 a week. By the mid-1930s, she was reportedly making $450,000 a year, billed as the highest pay in America. "Garbo's salary" became one of the "tops" in Cole Porter's list song, "You're the Top."
