I would like to wish all my Jewish friends a ........................ VERY HAPPY PASSOVER Briefly: Passover is the story of Exodus in the Old Testament.. The story of the freedom of the Hebrews that were in slavery with King Pharaoh.. The term Passover comes from the tenth plague that God put on the people and it was the slaying of the first born.. The Hebrews were told to put some Rams blood on the door frame and when the angel of death came, it would Passover those Hebrew homes with the blood.. The Last Supper that Jesus had on a Thursday was a Passover Sedar.. That was on the 14th day of the month of Nissan according to the Hebrew calendar.. Jesus was crucified on the 15th day of Nissan and it was a Friday..
Wishing you and yours a wonderful Passover, @Steve North ! Although I was raised in a Pentecostal church, I also went to Seventh Day Adventist school, and they taught us a little about the Old Testament festivals. After learning about how most of the traditional Christian holidays that I grew up with are pagan celebrations, I have pretty much stopped celebrating those holidays, but I still know very little about the traditional holy ones that were followed by Jesus. I am reading some of Rob Skiba's books, which help to explain the Old Testament better, and if you want to start a thread in the religion sub-forum about your beliefs, I would enjoy discussing that.
Passover is finished as of sunset on Saturday.. It is for 8 days.. Our days and holidays always start with sunrise and finish with sunset.. We don't go by the midnight thing..
I'm a newbie, and Passover is over, but wanted to convey to you Steve and all my Jewish friends, and non-Jewish friends, Shalom Aleichem ("unto you peace").
Thank-You....Are you Ashkenazi? Sephardic here. I read about the changes made with Passover food restrictions.
I have many good friends who are Ashkenazi in Naples. Fl. Sometimes spend my holidays with them. Other holidays I spend with my Sephardic friends in Miami, Fl. When my grandchildren come down here we go to Miami and visit the Florida Jewish Museum. One wrote an article about the history we have in Florida. Seeing those old pictures is amazing.
I take it you are in Florida.. I live in Massey, Ontario which is on top of lake Huron in Northern Ontario.. I come from Montreal... Actually my home town is Quebec City.. Had my Bar-Mitzvah there..
I've lived in Naples, Florida 30 Years. My home town was Toledo, Ohio and Waterville, Ohio. We loved going to Detroit Michigan, and visiting Windsor Canada. My folks visited Quebec City, I didn't get to go with them. There were two places dad wanted to see more then anything, Quebec, Canada and New Orleans, Louisiana. I'll always have a soft spot for New Orleans. The second oldest synagogue in the United States was built by the Turo family, Turo Synagogue. The first built was by the same family in Rode Island, and named Turo Synagogue. There was a large presents of Sephardic Jews (Reform) in the southern states.
