Joe, I've just returned from Southern Spain where we visited a monument The ‘Castillo de Colomares’ in memory of Christopher Columbus... It was built in the 1980's and early 90's ...quite a monument built in the style of Bizantine, Romanesque, Arabic and Gothic, in CC's name and very well worth a visit... here are some pictures I took a few days ago at our visit...
WOW! Think that's the most beautiful Castle ive seen. It's a monument not a castle? Anyway, so ornate...
Thanks Chrissy it is pretty...and believe it or not it's tucked away in the bottom a cliff top village and difficult to find and where comparatively few tourists go to visit., you need to really do your homework for the area to know it's even there...and it's only 2 euros for entry... As Castles go generally it's on the small side, and doesn't cover very much of an area...(it's 1500 square metres which makes it the largest monument dedicated to Columbus).., given that no-one has ever lived in it, it needn't have been built very big....but it's very beautiful and just like a Castle from a fairy story book
What a beautiful monument, Holly, I especially liked the bow of the ship and the anchor! A real discovery! Thank you.
Hey @Holly Saunders, welcome back. I hope you got a bit of a tan in all that sunshine. Neat pictures, it looks like the sort of thing I envisioned as a child when I would read stories of 'the old world', except it looks so very new. Which it is. Where are the people? Can you walk around in there? So tell all. What all did ya do? Are ya ready to plow through the coming wintery roads again? When do you get to retired lady?
HI Ina...thanks for the welcome back chikadee.. I visited lots of places when I was out in Spain, as well as being up ontop of the mountain at daughters home and playing with my beloved grandfurkids...ate out a lot...visited mountain villages, beach resorts and Cities.. We ate out a lot, and I still managed to lose 7pounds..(truth), because of all the walking we did, and no chocolate and that wonderful Mediterranean diet.. We Hired a Brand new jeep this time to negotiate the steep mountain tracks...so much easier than an ordinary car.. Daughter and grandfurkids are doing great except for the 2 elder dogs...old age has got them and we don't know how long they'll still be around, but it didn't stop them becoming wild with excitement like the younger dogs when they saw me!! awww I love them so much! I'm just off to bed now ..i'ts late and I have to be back to work tomorrow morning..up at 5.30am...and it's freezing cold in the mornings, but no ice yet thank Goodness. As for retirement Ina...that may be coming sooner than I think..I've 99% decided that I'm giving up before Christmas...might even be sooner than that!!
Fabulous pictures, Holly. Columbus might have been brave and adventurous but he \wasn't very smart. He didn't know where he was going. When he got there, he didn't know where he was. When he got back, he didn't know where he had been.
He didn't find a new land, America, either, and neither did all those others that keep popping up. The Native American 'Indians' were here for a long time before any of them.
