The B-25 light bomber was called the "Mitchell", in honor of Gen. Billy Mitchell, who advocated major roles for aircraft in the War. (WW2)

It was a squadron of 16 B-25's who made the bombing raid on Tokyo as our first "Crack against the Japs" following Pearl Harbor. They all flew off the carrier "Hornet" and a few came back.

A Hollywood movie was produced about the raid, called "Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo".

    www.diveplanit.com/dive-site/great-white-wall/

I was newly certified for Scuba Diving and had only done a half dozen dives before this one and none were as deep as this one and I was a little frightened. The Dive Master told me not to worry and that the National Geographic folks that were diving the site as well would keep an eye on me.

The Trade Center buildings COLLAPSED from the airplane impacts, while the Empire State Bldg. only suffered local structural damage and the damage to the masonry façade from the impact by the B-25 bomber on July 28, 1945.

The ESB was built in 1931, during the Great Depression, using structural steel girders and beams, carefully built by conscientious workers who valued their jobs.

This is why the Empire State Building will stand indefinitely.
