We have many more socialist programs instituted as a result of that period.
Now a days these folks would be collecting food stamp, probably subsidized rent, kids would receive free lunches at school and Medicaid, would handle their health needs'
Now a days the Republican party would see these folks just as the photograph depicts, on their own, existing on charity from family and strangers.

Why do you feel the need to bring politics into every thread @Peter Renfro ?
Do your Russian/Chinese handlers tell you to do that?

Well I am a political animal. Politics is in every bit of our lives.
No I haven't gotten a check from George Soros or my other thought masters for a while now, do you think I'm getting screwed? I feel kind of like Albuquerque waiting for trump to pay his bill.
Is the RNC regular in your payments?

    So ?
The very rich made money at it, off the others. Many of the rich , or some, knew ahead of time, and profited even more because of that.

And some of the poor, did not even know there was a depression until weeks, months or years later someone told them.

Having Fun – Family Time (link)

"Even though farm life was difficult in the 1930s, children growing up in that era found ways to have fun just doing "kid things." Ruth Nettleton enjoyed ice skating and roller skating, and loved riding in the back of the hay wagon. Harvey Pickerel remembers racing the neighbor boys on horseback on their way to school. This picture is my mom and dad, working on the engine from the old Ford, about 1930, in California. They then made the trek back to north Idaho and spent the rest of the depression there on an old ranch that they bought.
Mom would tell me stories about carrying the old metal milk pails down to town and selling the milk so they could buy flour and other things they needed.
