We all know (and love ? ) using malt vinegar on our fish and chips; but has anyone ever used it for things like salad dressing, or something besides just dowsing food with it ? My daughter gave me two gallons of malt vinegar, and it would take the rest of my life for Bobby and I to use it up on just fish and chips. I have been reading about the uses for malt vinegar, and it sounds like it can be used just like most any other vinegar, so I am going to try making salad dressing with it instead of using the combination of apple cider vinegar and balsamic vinegar that I usually make my salad dressing with. Since salad dressings are the main thing that I use vinegar for, I have been wondering what else might be good with malt vinegar instead of ACV. Who else uses malt vinegar, and what do you do with it besides putting it on fish or potatoes ?
I think you can blend the malt vinegar with balsamic or sherry vinegar in your dressings. Give it a try and let us know how it works. We make flavored vinegar, and have made cider vinegar, but have never made malt vinegar.
Yvonne, I have only used it on fish 'n chips, but I imagine it could be used in place of other vinegars in some recipes. Maybe even sprinkled on southern greens.
I use it on fries, fried chicken, corn dogs, hot dogs in a bun, fish sandwiches, any time I cook fish it gets sprinkled on, pork chops, salads, marinades and yesterday I tried a few sprinkles over my scrambled eggs .. it was actually quite tasty. That quantity you have is huge ! I would suggest doing a Google search - uses for malt vinegar and see what comes up.
I have done that today, and used the malt vinegar in place of my regular ACV/balsamic vinegar in my vinaigrette dressing, and it is sitting and marinating the oregano and spices in right now. I will test it out on my next salad, and then report back. I tried some just to taste it, and it seems like it will make a good dressing.
