This is why mud season lasts so long in Maine. It rains at least a few times a week every day of spring, and most days in the summer.
This isn't even unusual. This is the kind of weather we always have this time of year. The rain adds to the snow melt, so it's messy.
We had this situation in Idaho as well. Because it gets so cold in the winter, and the ground freezes so deep, it takes it a while to thaw out in the spring, so when the snow starts to melt, it can’t seep into the frozen ground, and just sits on top and turns everything into mud. Plus, spring is when we get lots of rain, so that compounds the problem. Back when I was growing up, most of the roads except for he highways and downtown were just gravel or dirt roads, so every spring, they turned into mud bogs, and the schools would all be closed for a week or so until the ground thawed, and the mud dried up enough that cars and school busses could run again. All of the logging, and other outdoor work , pretty much also came to a close during that time, which was called “spring runoff”.
24 F. this morning and about 2 inches of new snow overnight. Winter is not quite over yet. Everything is very muddy as the snow melts, and the wet cold makes things miserable.
The summers, short thought they may be, are magnificent however. We are already up to almost 16 hours of daylight...perhaps more.
