Last week I filed my federal and state income tax. And today I get a corrected return from Social Security. I did not check the first statement(I NEVER have). there was a 10% change in reported SS income.
Many years ago, I realized that I had made a mistake on my tax return two days after having mailed it in. I immediately called the IRS and asked what to do. My instructions were to do the corrected return, write AMENDED RETURN in big red letters at the top and also write AMENDED RETURN in red on the face and back of the envelope. That's what I did. A few weeks later, I received a check for the incorrect amount of return. The next day, I received a check for the correct amount. Wow, bless 'em, they sent me two checks! So I called and asked what to do with the incorrect check. Hang on to it and I will receive instructions where to send it. Can't you just tell me now? Nope, wait for instructions. So I waited. A month later, I called again. Wait for instructions. I did. Two months later...…."wait for instructions". Three months, four months, five months. I call and get the same answer. Finally, twelve months later, I put it in an envelope with a letter and send it certified mail to the main address. I never received "instructions" from the IRS. I've always wondered what would have happened if I had just cashed both checks.
I've filed an amended return for myself a few times. I used to do taxes on the side and had my own clients and worked for H&R Block for a few tax seasons, so have filed a bunch of them for clients. It's no big deal. They must process tens of thousands (or way more) of them a year, individual and business.
