This holiday is just too gouda to brie true. On Jan. 20, National Cheese Lover’s Day is celebrated from coast to coast, and Americans can’t seem to get enough of the dairy confection. According to a recent report from Bloomberg, Americans eat a whopping 35 pounds of cheese each year, more than ever before. The International Dairy Foods Association states that the bestselling cheese in the U.S. dances between Italian-style varieties like mozzarella and American-style choices like cheddar. Whether you favor grilled cheese, mac and cheese, cheese crackers, cheese fries, cheesey soups, cheesey potatoes, queso, or cheesecake, there’s no reason to feel bleu or throw a feta, for National Cheese Lover's day welcomes all. I think I get my share. 35 pounds doesn't seem like much.
Everything is better with a little bit of cheese on it................... Except ice cream. That's better with a little bit of chocolate on it.
February 26 and it's NCD!! Yeah! Uh, what's NCD you may ask? National Chef's Day!! I just heard it on the radio and yep, it's the one day of the year that Chef's are accorded with our own day. Funny, after nearly 50 years in the Food and Beverage industry (secular career) I never knew there was such a day or I might have prepared better for it! What to do? In the kitchen it's all about prep, prep, prep and here I am, totally unprepared. Do I don my show coat and go down town to await the parade or is there a presidential statement on CNN that I should watch and possibly shed a small tear when they come to the fallen chef's portion? Dunno............ It would seem that every other event that is nationally recognized involves some form of meal like Mother's Day, Valentine's Day, Vet's Day, July 4th, etc but if there is eating involved and it's a day celebrating chefs then who does the cooking? The dishwasher, the prep cook, the utility person, or maybe even someone's mom but it certainly wouldn't be proper for a chef to commemorate his or her own day by preparing their own meal. Again, I do not know and am (embarrassingly) so totally unprepared for such a prestigious thing as a day celebrating my secular occupation that I might skip this one and await next year's celebration. Yep, next year should be a real bang up day, that is, if any other chef's even have a clue what National Chef's Day is.
Well, National Chef's Day is certainly over without any real trauma except for the fact that today is now National Pancake Day. Can we prepare Crepe's instead?
Yes, being Hungarian I prefer crepes. We didnt have pancakes just crepes growing up in my family. Maybe that's why I don't care for pancakes.
