Many believe the Native Americans were given pitiful recompense, as far as their Reservations are concerned. In fact, many, such as the Navajo, located where they had originated. Arizona's Navajoland is immensely large, desolate, and for the most part, very beautiful. I present this image as proof. This Monolith is nearly as tall as the Empire State Building! Note the trees and other flora at it's base, as well as the well-defined "wash", or arroyo, which carries run-off from rains.

The Tony Hillerman novels always make me want to visit the area.

I recall reading one, about a Navajo Reservation Police Officer. Interesting reading, well-integrated conceptually with our "culture" while acquainting this white man with customs and mores previously unknown by him. It illustrated the plight of simply enduring facing a lot of the Navajos.

Most of his novels are about Joe Leaphorn or his cronies. I have enjoyed all I have read.

I have read all Tony Hillermann's books. You're right, Don, the dtwo main characters throughout his books are Jim Chee and Joe Leaphorn. My imagination is all i had to visulize the country he talked about but I have seen pictures as the one Frank posted and some others I have found. I have read one book written by Tony's daughter but not as good as his.

Very few non-Indians have. One guy long ago opened a general store which still exists today. I think the Indian Nation kind of "adopted" him, a Jewish transplant from New York!

The Indian residents do live in poverty, many, a few go for an education, and flee the "rez". A guy I worked with knew a Navajo going to college with him who finally said he just couldn't imagine adopting the "white way", dropped out, and returned home.
