Australia has been procrastinating over whether to adopt nuclear to power our country since the mid 70s to my knowledge. We already have a small facility in Sydney (actually no more than 5kms from me) that is mostly for medical purposes.. such as isotopes.

I have been reading about Thorium-based nuclear power generation as perhaps a safer alternative to plutonium-based.. in the wake of Fukushima and the earlier Chernobyl and three Mile Island near disasters.

Thorium-based reactors are safer because the reaction can be easily stopped as the operation does not have to take place under extreme pressures. Compared to uranium reactors, thorium reactors produce far less waste and that waste that is generated is much less radioactive and much shorter-lived.

@Frank Sanoica other than The Netherlands do you know of any other nation using Thorium reactors?
