Then you must not have watched the MTM show much.. Her friend Rhoda was similar to what you describe, but not Mary.

It's not "old" by I can watch The Golden Girls over and over an not get tired of it.
Grew up watching I Love Lucy, The Honeymooners, The Little Rascals, Father Knows Best, and every Abbott and Costello movie made. Entertainment was so much better back then.

In Australia we had a mixture of American and Brit sitcoms. Some I recall are Patty Duke Show, Dick Van Dyke Show, Gilligans Island, Get Smart (US) Doctor In the House, Are You Being Served, Open All Hours, The Likely Lads (Brit)

When did you get television and what was the best early show you can remember? I reckon Australia was introduced to television a little after America. I was at boarding school and our strict masonic masters allowed us boys the princely viewing time of one hour per week nite and two hours on the weekend. It was not until school hols that I got hooked on such shows as Whirly Birds, Cannonball, Rin -Tin-Tin and Superman. Cant forget Looney Tunes cartoons. Who remembers these shows? .[IMG]

My all time favourite is 'Del Boy' Only Fools & Horses
    Cheers
    George and Mildred
    Mary Tyler Moore show
    These are family sitcoms :p
If not family sitcoms - then the Twilight Zone was a favourite

I guess that depends on what you call old and, to some extent, how you identify a family sitcom. For example, there were no families in WKRP in Cincinnati but it was the kind of show that families would watch together. In the order that I thought of them.
    1. Little House on the Prairie
    2. The Walton's
    3. Green Acres
    4. All in the Family
    5. WKRP in Cincinnati
    6. The Courtship of Eddie's Father
    7. That 70s Show
    8. Taxi
    9. MASH
    10. The Cosby Show
There are probably others, like Paper Chase, that I liked better than some of these, but I'm just not thinking of them now.

Duh. I just noticed that my list isn't "sitcoms" at all. (Well, maybe a couple.) I must have old-timer's.

Now with the best will in the world, Australia... especially in the early days was never somewhere that made good tv shows...but who as a kid couldn't love Skippy the Bush Kangaroo...

Ditto to your earlier statement. Woeful actually.. until The Naked Vicar Show and Kingswood Country came along in the late 70s.. Skippy was cringeworthy to this Aussie.

Sitcom: A comedy TV series involving the same cast of actors who play the same characters each week

If a rerun were playing right now, I'd watch these.

    The Odd Couple
    Mary Tyler Moore Show
    Moonlighting
Mad About You (Helen Hunt, Paul Reiser)

Some of them, like All in the Family, were great, but became dated with time, imo. Some, like The Andy Griffith Show, I got tired of, after watching reruns over and over.

Does anyone remember that crazy one, Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman (1976-1978). I had to keep watching it because I never could figure it out. :p
