Did any of you ever build a flying model airplane from a balsa wood kit that used a rubber band to spin the propeller? My Dad and I did when we lived on Wheeling Island when I was 5 to 8 years old. Hal
I remember having those when I was a kid, too ! I used to enjoy winding them up and watching them fly, you just had to be careful where you flew them because a crash landing somewhere could destroy that soft balsa wood. It was pretty flimsy.
I never did, but my one brother and my son have built many. My son built all sorts of models when he was a kid, and even made dioramas which were award winning in scouts.
One of my sons has built model planes all his life. Got into RC early on. He's even got a jet fighter plane.
The little ones that I had were not like a model plane that you had to build. They came from the dime store in a little cellophane bag, and you just slid the wings through the body and the tail parts, and it was ready to go. They didn’t cost much, and I think that all of the kids around had those when they were popular. If you look at the picture that Ken posted, you can see that it just fits together easily; so it is totally different from the kits of model airplanes that you had to put together with model glue and then paint, but didn’t actually fly.
Oh, I quite forgot those, Yvonne. Right, I recall them too. I was such a klutz, couldn't even get them right.
