I just watched an interesting movie on netflix called Stonehearst Asylum. It is based on a story by Edgar Allan Poe, so it is decidedly strange. It's set in 1899 England and is about a young doctor, who takes a position at a mental institution. When he gets there, he finds the institute is being run in an unconventional manner! It has the typical Poe twist to it and examines the methods of treating mental illness at the turn of the century. It stars Michael Caine, Ben Kingsley and Kate Beckinsale. Definitely well worth watching.
Edgar Allan Poe had in the past been a favorite author of mine, his story line can get a little dark and disturbing, I will check it out to and hope it does not scare me out of my own skin.
It's actually more weird and strange than it is scary - not a Vincent Price type movie. It's also interesting that the story is set in 1899 when Poe, himself, died in 1849, 50 years before. I think they wanted to be able to include "modern" psychiatric practices that weren't in use during Poe's time, the early part of the 1800s. It shouldn't scare you, but it definitely will make you think twice about "asylums".
This movie looks great! Thanks for the recommendation. Just added it to my ever growing list of Must Sees.
