A New Mexico tourism employee was quoted as saying she had been at a party in the eastern U.S and mentioned to the group that she was from New Mexico. A man said, "Oh, I've been to Mexico and I really liked it!" She said, "No, I live in NEW Mexico." He replied, "Oh yeah, new Mexico, Cancun and all that." I checked in for a flight to Hawaii some years ago and the ticket counter agent asked if we had our passports. Why would I need a passport, I asked. Well, you're going to Hawaii. Why would I need a passport for Hawaii? Well, it's a foreign country. No, it's been a US state since 1959. Oh, yes <giggle, giggle>, you're right! I was absolutely flabbergasted that a ticket agent would make that mistake.
People occasionally ask if they can spend American Dollars in Alaska. There are even a few who are amazed that they cannot hear the barrels of oil rolling through the Trans Alaska Pipeline. We get the passport question as well.
