These are not shows you miss which are discussed in the TV group, just the earliest shows remembered. Our 1st boob tube was a Zenith circular with 12" screen and rabbit ears, 1948. Just two channels at first until a third was added later. The one "program" I remember from morning TV was Test Pattern. Didn't understand it, but watched it anyway. There were Cavalcade of Stars with Jack Carter, Howdy Doody, Martin Kane Private Eye, local wrestling, Lone Ranger, Mama (which my mother loved), and a local talk show which ran all day Saturday. I don't recall these from the 40s: 20 Questions, Life of Riley, Kukla Fran and Ollie, You Bet Your Life, Arthur Godfrey, Queen For A Day, and several others that are surprises. Guess we didn't do too much TV watching then. Don't know if big time sports were piped into our town but certainly do not remember any.
We didn't get a TV until 1952 or 53? Only remember the 40's shows that carried on into the 50's, like Truth or Consequences Mr. and Mrs. North Meet the Press The Goldbergs This is Your Life Anyone remember Broadway Open House, with Jerry Lester and Dagmar? It began in 1950.
Yes. Jerry Lester and Dagmar took over from Jack Carter I believe and they in turn were replaced by Jackie Gleason, if memory serves.
I remember Queen For A Day. Those were the days, when a woman got emotional over a fully automatic washer and dryer!!! Lots of drudgery was eliminated back then.
I think we got our first set in 1953 or 1954. I remember Ding-Dong School and Howdy Doody. The funny thing is that I can remember Bishop Fulton Sheen had a show on TV. He'd come in and swing his cape and he was so intense looking...….and I thought he was the devil. Wow, the devil had a show! Who knew? Not a six-year-old, anyway.
Jeanne Cagney, sister of James Cagney, was the "fashion commentator" on that show. I remember there was a big controversy when she got pregnant. Would she be allowed to continue on the show while "showing"? She was, and nothing terrible happened.
I had no idea that's who she was. We seem to be a nation of extremes...we go from weird irrational standards to no standards at all. I wonder how she was able to remain on the air in those days? She's got to be the first female TV personality to keep her public presence while "with child." I don't recall the controversy (I was born in '54), and neither her WIKI page nor the show's WIKI page makes mention of it. You would think she'd be hailed as a pioneer.
That was about the same time Lucille Ball was pregnant on I Love Lucy. Looks like Lucy was the first. . LINK
Interesting. Reminds me of I Dream of Jeannie. Barbara Eden's costume had to be modified so it did not show her belly button. I'll never forgive them for that.
