The fastest I can ever remember driving my own car was 64 years ago, in 1956, when I was driving home from a night job. I let my 1952 Oldsmobile Super 88 climb to an indicated 106 MPH, then let off. Since then, I've owned cars which were much faster (such as my 1968 Pontiac Firebird 400), but never took them to their limits. Hal
I've been up over a hundred but, at that point, I was afraid to look down at the speedometer often. This was before power steering, and that might make a difference because I regularly drive up to 85 in northern Maine and that doesn't seem very fast.
The reason I got rid of my Camaro was because it was too fast and too quiet about it. When i travel long distances I used to like to drive at night (when I could see at night) and more often than not I’d look down at the speedometer and find that i was cruising down the highway at around a hundred or so. So, instead of getting a high priced ticket or losing control because of a flat at a high speed, I sold the Camaro and bought a Cadillac. Yeah, I know that Cadillacs are quiet and fast too but as heavy as they used to be, it takes longer to build up to a high speed and it’s more noticeable.
I though that over 100 on the Autobahn was everyday stuff. That highway system is probably the safest in the world at any speed. Hal
When did you hear that and where? It sounds 90s to me. Yet the days of the old claim in commercials "Tested on German motorways/highways" are over. Some people still drive that fast if they have the right car that would still be whisper-quiet at that speed, who don't care about the environment, and just want to be a speedster. But even they can drive that fast only for a few kilometers on certain Highways at a given time. The average speed is way lower because we are a crowded country, crowded everywhere. The recommended speed is - still - 80. But there's a growing movement demanding to reduce it to 62 as the limit.
Don't really know. In high school I had testosterone overload,(like all teenage boys) and a '66 Olds 442. Only guy that could consistently beat me had a Barracuda. I tried my best, so I know I was going fast, best guess is 100/110.
I'm afraid it would be only about 90 mph. Then I chickened out. Don't remember the car. Probably a '67 Mustang. Might have exceeded that momentarily while passing someone on a 2-lane. I always wanted to get that over with ASAP. Also related being a chicken. Cluck! Cluck!
I don't remember when or where I heard that, Thomas...I always thought the Autobahn was the King of Highways. Hal
