Today, 12-21-2020, is the first day of Winter and the longest day of the Year. (And the shortest night) Because the Earth tilts 23.5 degrees on its axis with respect to the plane of its Solar Orbit, we have Seasons! Harold
I think you have that backwards - Winter Solstice is the shortest day and longest night.... And tonight we can watch the "Grand Conjunction" if you are lucky enough to have clear skies - we are under heavy cloud cover here in Ohio so no chance
To further clarify...this is in the northern hemisphere. From this point on, the days will be getting longer. Regarding the Grand Junction...I have my [old & cheap] telescope out.
Hoot, you are absolutely right!.....It's the SHORTEST day of the year! And the conjunction of the gas giants Jupiter and Saturn makes them seem VISUALLY close together, but Big Jupe is a half-billion miles farther away from us than Saturn! Hal (With my old 17.5" Discovery Reflector Telescope)
Today just sucked! It has been dismal all day. blah... I started out at 9:30 a.m. to pick up my prescriptions...oh so gloomy. Went to Kroger around noon and I felt like it was 6:30 p.m. ho hum. Not on iota of sunshine...ugh.
