Would You Ever Take In A Roomer/tenant?

Personally, it would never work for me. I don’t like to share my living space. If necessary, I’d consider drastic downsizing and belt-tightening to avoid taking in a renter.

Many years ago it was more common for people to take in roomers. I remember an aunt who had a large house and rented rooms to guys who had just returned from military duty. It worked out fine and they also helped with maintenance/chores. (She had strict rules ….no women in the rooms and no alcohol.)

The more recent situations I know of involved homeowners who didn’t check people out and were anxious to get some extra money. What followed was slow/no rent payments, troublesome overnight guests, police calls, and evictions.

I know of/have heard of some nightmarish landlord/tenant situations. Even taking in someone via a personal referral can be sketchy. As far as strangers, there’s the background/criminal check, credit check, income verification, collection of rent, living habits, personal preferences, visitors, issues re: shared use of common shared areas such as kitchen…….these are just some of the considerations. Then there’s liability if someone gets hurt. I've also seen quite a few landlord/tenant/roommate "hot mess" situations on The People's Court, Judge Judy, etc.

(Sure, sometimes it can work out. But anyone considering being a landlord should watch the 1988 movie Pacific Heights w/Michael Keaton.)

Myself, I don't need to watch any movie .. IMO, they all end badly. ..

I could never do that ... maybe more dogs, lol .... Have had people make 'helpful suggestions' about taking someone into my home ... thanks, but no thanks! It NEVER works out.
Had my own kids come back for a while after college, etc... couldn't wait until they moved on.

NO! Are you kidding, I would be a mental wreck. I'm too OCD to have someone living with me.

If they were just a slightly bit messy, I couldn't take it. I wouldn't say anything because I'm too nice:) but it would eat at me and make me resentful.

No. It stops with my 2 grandsons and one is enough at a time.

Once when I was in transition I lived in a house-sharing situation for 6 months, waiting to move into a new place. The house I shared was a gorgeous house in an upscale neighborhood. But I almost went NUTS. The owner wanted to be besties, and I wanted to do my own thing. I didn’t like being questioned….”Where ya going? Where have you been? What do you have planned today?” And she was a self-appointed food-cop. Arrrgggh!

The best time was when I left for work and when she went to South America for 3 weeks – it was a relief! But I was so glad when I moved out.

The reality is that I have the room for a roomate, maybe even two and the money would be nice but I would be miserable.

I couldn't even tolerate my SO, I think we would have lasted longer if he lived elsewhere.

We let my husband's cousin live with us back in the 80s. He was like my parents age and a neat freak...lol. I was in my 30s and working full time. I cooked every night for us all and he'd wash dishes. It was only for 3 months because he lost his job and moved back where he came from.

    We've been roommate free since then...and I don't want another one. :)

I've also seen each episode at least 100 times.
