Sixteen people were feared dead after a hot air balloon caught on fire and crashed in Central Texas, officials said.

Caldwell County Sheriff Daniel Law said in a statement his office received a 911 call at 7:44 a.m. local time about a possible vehicle accident at a spot near Lockhart, Texas.

He said when emergency responders and deputies arrived on the scene it was apparent that the reported fire was the basket portion of a hot air balloon.

    How awful. :(
I've always loved the idea of a hot air balloon ride, but would never actually do it. Too dangerous.

Here is one short video showing the hot air balloon before it crashes. Since it was on fire before it even crashed, probably some, if not all of the people would have died before it even hit the ground.
When I was looking for the video, I noticed that barely a month ago there was another hot air balloon that burned up with passengers on board, and that one happened in Texas, too.
I already thought this was a pretty scary thing to do before I saw the videos, and now there is NO doubt in my mind that I for sure do not want to go up in one of those balloons.
What an awful way to die....

An incredibly horrible way to die I agree...and I would never ever go up into a hot air balloon, even though I have friends who co-own one..

Here is a recent picture and video of the Captain of the balloon...an experienced guy who according to the reports had such passion for ballooning would fly 7 days a week.

The theory is that the basket may have hit one of the many power lines in the area...

I've always felt a fire would be worst way to die. One reason WTC 9/11 was so horrific. :(

This is a sad news that killed people in a simple accident. We have dreamed of taking a ride in the hot air balloon since so many years ago. There is a festival of hot air balloons here every January (or February, not sure) in Clark Air base (a former US air base which is now managed by Philippine authorities). I had been there once but we were not able to buy a ticket for the rides are limited. The ticket counter attendant said that we should come early, as early as 5am.

I wonder who those who died felt when the fire had started. Surely it was scary, much more considering that they perished. This incident will definitely discourage us from taking a balloon ride.

Seems like 16 would be a lot of people at one time in it.
