According to this very active TV Commercial if you take this particular med it will curb your desire to smoke but you may run the risk of having seizures. Damned if you do and damned if you don't eh?

I know 2 meds that are used for stopping smoking, Zyban and Chantrix. I used Zyban 9 years ago to quit and it helped me and I didn't have any side effects.

If one person has a side effect, it has to be listed. So to answer your question I'll take the med over lung cancer and or emphysema.

I have heard of other people taking those meds, and none of them had seizures. I think that those side effects are probably few and far between, like Chrissy said, if one person has a side effect it has to be listed, so it is probably not the experience of most people who are taking the drug. I wouldn't worry about it a whole lot to be honest. It is just one of those things.

What kind of medication is that to expose you to the probability of a seizure? Smoking is one addition that is so difficult to stop but I don't think that medication is a good enough way to quit smoking. I have seen how a seizure killed my mother-in-law. She was out of the ICU and was recovering beautifully when a seizure hit here without warning. She lost her speech, couldn't move and the only communication she had were her eyes. She died after 3 days in that pitiful condition. With the probability of lung cancer, I think you can gamble on that because not all smokers get lung cancer.

I'd rather chance a seizure than have lung cancer, Corie. Lots of people live with seizures on medication.

The side effect listed of many meds is seizures, also stopping a med after long term use can cause a seizure.

All smokers will get something, COPD, emphysema and a few other diseases also have smoking as a factor.

Here is a list of medications that can cause a seizure. Also remember if one person reported having a seizure, it has to be listed on side effects.

Also sorry to hear your mother in law died that way. My mother died from respiratory failure and that wasn't pretty either...she was a smoker who quit but still developed emphysema.

Also, Zyban the med I took to quit is really just Wellbutrin, an antidepressant that they found worked for helping smokers quit. So they called it Zyban and gave directions on how to use for quitting smoking.

Can't remember exactly since it's been 9'years but you took the med and could smoke for the first week or two then you tapered off and quit.

Somehow it stopped the craving...instead of smoking a pack a day, I could smoke only 3 a day, then finally none. Still wasn't easy peasy but it worked for me.

Wether you get lung cancer or not you might as well quit because it's not allowed in so many places
That even 9 years ago it was stressful if I was somewhere that I couldn't smoke.

I hardly see any smokers in California...even outside.

My sister took Chantrix and ended up in the ER. She was having hallucinations and labored breathing. Luckily she was aware and woke her husband. She said it was the most frightened she'd ever been.

Chantrix caused my ex to have very bad nightmares. You can always quit cold turkey or use nicotine patches I guess.

My next door neighbour smokes and has for fifty years he is 104 now so I guess if he live long enough he might get something he is on no meds yet. That smoking will kill him some day.
There is quite a few people getting lung cancer who never smoked they must be getting someone else cancer. Just kidding if you fry foods using oil you will get a chance of lung cancer from the free radicals in the air from frying.

Hmm, something to think about when quitting smoking with drugs. The commercials seems good to try Chantrix. Good to know the truth here about Chantrix.

My mom didn't have any health problems at 72 either, @Chris Ladewig. She started needing oxygen at about 75.

I never tried Chantrix but Zyban worked wonders for me with no side effects, I'd still be smoking if not for that.

I think what got to me to quit more than any health issue was that since nobody smoked at all in my familyor anybody that I knew or saw in CA. I felt like a leper everytime I had to sneak off for a cigarette, then pop a mint, then spray my clothes because only non smokers smell it on your clothes and hair. That was the first thing I noticed when I quit. How someone smelled after a cigarette.

I always hated being preached to when smoking but there is just not one good thing about it except the pleasure it gives you at the moment. Everything else to do with cigarettes is negative, cost, health, smell, exposing kids to second hand smoke, burning down homes while drunk and smoking, burning holes in clothes or car seats , yellow walls if you smoked inside, freezing if you smoked outside. Did I miss anything? Lol
