We have the occasion of All Saints Day on November 1 when we visit the cemetery for our dead relatives. That may be the equivalent of Halloween here. But with the trick or treat, it seems that it is an emerging activity because at this early, some upside villages are already putting up signages that trick-or-treating is allowed only for the residents. Children in the depressed areas would get inside the village of the wealthy in the guise of trick-or-treating but actually asking for alms. With that action of the village security people, it is a discouragement of that activity.
When I lived in Hungary for those 6 years that was the custom there too, visiting the cemetery and lighting candles In remembrance of your loved ones. They didn't do trick or treating then but now on FB I see some Hungarian friends with photos of their kids dressed for halloween so it must be catching on as all American customs do eventually.
Yesterday we bought a pack of Energizer AA (Double A) Lithium Batteries for my Darth Vader costume and Lightsaber. Lithium means we won't have to worry about the lights on my costume or in my Lightsaber going out. This Supreme Costume is going look great for this year's parties.
Nope. Had it here two years ago, but due lack of interest and kids living in the complex, not here anymore. Local casino ship will have one and hopefully a few other places. Wife is taking the day after Halloween off, so, if need be, we can drive somewhere and spend the night. My costume costs way too much not to attend a party.
We had zero trick-or-treaters last Halloween, and I think only one or two the year before. We used to get quite a few but after the mill closed, a lot of the people who used to live here moved, and others moved in. Since we don't get around town too much, we don't know as many people here as we did ten years ago.
They are having the party on both AM and PM cruises. Unfortunately, the same day (Saturday) of the ship party is the Florida/Georgia college football game here. That means either all of the hotels close to the ship's port will already be booked and/or outrageous cost for a night. The PM Cruise doesn't get back into the dock until 1AM and we don't drive that late at night. The AM Cruise, that we might go on, won't be as exciting/fun as the PM Cruise. A Halloween party is a "night" thing, not an afternoon thing.
You're lucky, Ken......I hate getting up every minute here, plus Pickles barks like crazy. If I didn't have a Drs appt on the 31st Id go to my daughter's. She never gets any either....she lives at the top of hill in a gated community. She would take her kids trick or treating when younger to the neighborhood below hers and put out a big cauldron of candy on her front porch but None was ever gone. Now the boys don't go cause theyre too old but maybe the 17 yr old goes and gets into some mischief...he's prone to that.
Hopefully you can find a room somewhere....I wouldn't want to do the am one either, just not the same.
When I was little we went house to house went home and went to each other's homes to see what our haul was for the yr. I believe ours was the last ones to really go from home to home, for it was the first yr. treats came with bad surprises...apples with razors and other candies with razors ...so many decided it became too dangerous for children to go trick or treating on their own. I believe I was in 4th grade when it happened when razors appeared in treats at Halloween, way back in the 60's. Today all the Malls have special Halloween and Christmas festivities. Parents pack up their children and head for the Malls to celebrate Halloween. http://www.alamoana.com/Events/Halloween-Trick-Or-Treating For the adults on Oahu...Halloween brings Hallowbaloo time: http://hallowbaloo.com/2016/. There is All Saints Day, http://www.churchyear.net/allsaintsprayers.html Fun Halloween to all...and sweet memories too to all!
Since farms had a number of acres (fields) between them, farmers kids didn't go Trick or Treating. Parents didn't drive us around either. IOW, Halloween was a city thing to do.
A newer thing is "Trunk or Treat." People bring their kids and gather in a parking lot with their cars. Cars may be decorated for Halloween. Trunks full of candy. Kids wear their costumes and go from car to car. In the south it would probably be "Tailgate or Treat."
Hallowe'en isn't a big tradition in Sweden. In spite of efforts by commerce to introduce the celebration it's never really taken off. We get very few kids come round trick or treating. It also clashes with All Hallows which is when we traditionally go the cemetery and place lights on the graves of our departed relatives.
