http://www.abc10.com/news/local/california/highway-99-ranked-no1-deadliest-in-us/335866692 This is one of the highways I drive to get to my daughter's house. I'm on there for about 30 mins of my almost 3 hour drive. Winter is when it gets really bad and I have that to look forward to soon. Knock on wood, so far in 13 years I've had no accidents. This isn't even the part of the drive that I hate...I don't get sleepy on 99 that's for sure...you have to really pay attention. Just thought I'd share this exciting bit of information with all of you since it was in my Facebook feed. No need to reply...just a "poor Chrissy" will do.
Highway 395, CA and NV, must rank up there with them, based on it's diversity of terrain. My avatar was taken off of 395 near Susanville. Note the enormous expanse and depth of valley in the background. Frank EDIT: The photog's name was Sue! How could I forget such a time?
I was just on I 95 yesterday, the second deadliest. That road doesn't scare me as much as some roads that go through the mountainous foggy areas like the Blue Ridge Parkway, can't see your hand in front of your face on a damp night, or Route 30 in PA. The stretch from Greensburg to Bedford winding through the mountains is no fun at all after dark on a bad weather night.
@Chrissy Page Beautiful scenery![/QUOTE] Yes, except if you're driving you can't enjoy it or you'll end up dead. Actually most of the year it's all brown and there's nothing except hills and it makes me think I'm on another planet. There's a reservoir at the beginning of it if you're coming from Fresno and it's unbelievable how much the water has gone down. There were years where it almost touched the road, now it's so low that soon it will recede to the point where you won't see any water.
@Frank Sanoica I don't know when this pic was taken but the water is even lower now...when I first moved to Fresno the water covered that bit of land with the few trees on it.
Yep, it's the killer fog we get that usually causes the accidents. I remember one trip I couldn't see the stop sign til I was practically past it...scary for sure. Rain is also bad here because sewers clog up, seems Fresno can't handle rain and people don't know how to drive in it. All this is coming up soon and my going to my daughter's will be stressful.
Our Texas highways aren't too bad, but we do have the second worst city freeway in the country. I-45.
This is off the topic, but that pic reminds me the first time I saw Calif in person, many years ago now, I was really surprised how dry it was. I am not sure what I was expecting but the parched landscape really kind of surprised me.
Yes @K E Gordon , some parts of CA look like that all year. As I get nearer the coast on Pacheco Pass it does get greener. But more than half way on it it's all dry like that, so empty and desolate looking....when I first moved here and saw that I wanted to cry.
That looks like I-5 or the 405 heading to Los Angeles....also driving to San Francisco near Oakland I think if you're coming from Fresno.
@Ina I. Wonder That pic is absolutely incredible! We had heard the extreme growth of Houston had created massive rush-hour traffic, but I just can't imagine the scene shown. Frank
And that is just from one direction. There are at least six different direction into the city of Houston, and all of them look like that each morning and evening. It is nerve racking to get around this place. I have to travel rhrough it all the way from the far NE corner yo the SW corner of this nightmare at least once a month. In traffic it can take over two hours of bumper to bumper crawling. One of my reasons for moving.
