People with no sense of humor are ones I don't want to be around.

Fat RN here. Works in long term care. Did a double Friday night because no one showed up for night shift. The person on the schedule was a ghost from registry. Don't tell my employer, I'm calling in tomorrow. Still fighting a headache and too tired. But this fat woman pulled 16 plus hours.

Thank goodness my job is needed or I may never get hired. Perhaps some would prefer the attractive, thin, younger nurses who don't do their job right. I'm not going to get into things I know here. But I know what I know and you don't.

Years ago I applied at a nursing home as a housekeeper, I was in my 20's and interviewed by a male probably in his 30's. Said he was going to call either way, never heard from him as I expected. A time later, another nursing home was advertising for kitchen help. I filled out an application and reception stated the kitchen supervisor could come and talk with me. When I saw the short, pudgy woman in her 40's walking toward me, I thought " OH THANK GOODNESS". She hired me.

Yes looks matter. Does my honesty and work either matter as much? In reality I'm not sure. I'm not saying I'm the greatest thing in the employment force. I'm not sure where exactly my work ethic comes from. I know I've never been able to get by with anything. So I do things right. And I feel I have an obligation to do things right.

I've had a lot of families and resident's who liked me. I always try to do the best I can for them.

Skinny, fat, pretty, ugly. You may never really know who that person is.

To us, wife and I, there are a few different stages of being fat. To us, fat is pretty much heavy set-to-being just plain obese. The other stages are "puggy" or "pleasingly plump". My wife's doctor's nurse, in her later 50's, is extremely skinny, too skinny (to us) and wears no makeup at all. Has more wrinkles than even my wife does! She really looks like she has a serious health problem, is a heavy smoker and/or drinker. Don't know, but do know that she sure doesn't look healthy at all. The rest of the nurses and assistants in the office don't look this way.

Another thing, us older folks really need to watch how we talk about the younger generation of workers. Some are definitely loafers, but then again, I done some of my own "loafing" during the years I was employed. My work ethics sure weren't the best, but my wife is darn near a 100% opposite of me. I done my job, but also goofed around quite a bit as well. For example, my wife, unless absolutely necessary, wouldn't make any personal calls from work, whereas me, I had no problem with it.
"Good work ethics".......is that really something to have in the workplace?

    "What do you think?"

Workers in the medical field are as human as those in any other, thus subject to the frailties, temptations, failures, and weaknesses of any others. Thus, I might guess that as many health-care workers smoke and otherwise abuse their health as folks in any other line of work. Though, and I would hope experience and example would direct it, I suspect less of them are so-inclined to abuse their health than the general population.

@Cody Fousnaugh " Well, not to change my Thread, but I married my first wife mainly because of her looks"
Ain't this the truth! Recently-divorced and overcome by that demeaning experience, having taken a new job clear across the country away, I met a young woman in the Dana Plant, operating, incidentally, the machine I had built there 5 years earlier, and we "hit it off". She confirmed the small-town farm-girl rumors I had often heard, no hang-ups, fervently sexual, she was 28, I was 37, unhesitatingly used the "f" word if necessary, was nonetheless warm, soft-hearted, and not a "woman of the world", she moved in with us, my Mother then living with me since I had divorced.

In the middle of the night, after a rather protracted round of love-making, Debbie slipped out of our bedroom into the hallway to sneak to the bathroom. In the dimly-lit hall, she encountered my Mother, returning to her bedroom. Debbie was naked. My Mother was, certainly, not. I could not believe no mention whatsoever was made of that encounter between them, nor my Mother & I! This in view of the fact that sex was never an open article as I grew up and matured. My Folks taught me nothing about it.

I learned well, however, without their help! As they probably knew I would!

Well I was never a loafer but whatever you say. I'm not going to argue with you.

However I'm not going to have everything I am and do wrapped up into what I look like. Others can, I'm not. Have it that way if you want. It's called Lookism.

Back in better days I was on a first date with this woman. We planned to eat at a nice restaurant then see a show. While waiting at our tables, another man and woman entered and were seated across the aisle from us. The woman was pretty hefty, but neat and well dressed.
My date started making fun of her, saying things like "I bet she orders everything on the first page", and other comments. I bluntly told her to "cut that s**t out".
Well, that date was over. She got up and walked out. She must have got a cab or something. I didn't see her walking as I left. Or ever again.
I don't fault people for how they look, just how they act.

It's just that today, some people are not hired due to looks. Say it's illegal, say it's discrimination, but it does happen. And, the candidate will never know.

Would never see a heavy-set women working at Victoria's Secret, just like not seeing a heavy-set man working at a top-notch men's clothing or shoe store.

Used to be true with stewardesses but that's changed....maybe they were forced to hire older women. I remember
Way back when they had a height and weight requirement and it had nothing to do with being able to save people on a crashing plane, they just wanted attractive women.

Most airlines, a stewardess has to be tall enough to reach the overhead baggage compartment and able to sit in the jump seat comfortably. I have only seen attractive, and most of the time, very attractive stewardesses.

There just happen to be certain jobs where looks is a requirement, even though it's not verbally stated.

They are definitely older now and looks aren't a basis for hiring anymore. I fly a lot, in fact I know a lady my age that is or was a stewardess for Frontier.

In fact there are a lot of stewards now. I would say half the flights I've been on there was at least one male.

That's what may be stated, but I've never seen a heavy set crew member, male or female, on an airline or at the ticket counter. They all appear to be height/weight proportioned.
