Wife and I were at our local Mall today and I noticed a nice looking young (possibly college age) Black gal wearing a sweatshirt with this written on the front:
The Blacker The College, The Higher The Education

I gave her the "ok" hand sign, with a smile. She was with an older lady, that we figured was her mom. We think the girl was sort of shocked that I noticed her sweatshirt and gave her the "ok" sign.

Was her sweatshirt racist? I mean, what would local Blacks think if the seen a White person wearing a sweatshirt that read: The Whiter The College, The Higher The Education.

What do you think about what was written on this young ladies sweatshirt?

I don't think it was racist at all, it was a slogan and she is either wearing a sweatshirt she bought just for the slogan or she's genuinely proud of her school.

However, and this is the biggie, I do feel, in fact I know...that if the girl had been white and she'd been wearing the same t-shirt with the ''white'' slogan on it, in the UK at least , she would have been reported as someone inciting racial hatred.. and there's every possibility she would have been arrested

Actually, we think if the word "Whiter" would have been put into the slogan, replacing "Blacker", and worn into a Mall where a large percentage of Blacks go, trouble would brew.

It sound like the slogan is putting down colleges that mostly Whites attend.

Certainly not as bad as the slogan I saw a retired Vet carrying on his cap visor: "THE PROBLEM IS MUSLIM".

"Blacker" : Curriculum, or student body, general attitude, or color of the buildings?

Awe, come on now Frank. A college aged Black girl wearing this sweatshirt obviously has to mean skin color.
She could get away with wearing this sweatshirt here, because out demographics here is almost 40% Black. But, in an area where the demographics would be 5% or less Black......I don't think so.

    @Cody Fousnaugh

"demographics here is almost 40% Black. "

I was being facetious, Cody, as usual. Where are you located now? I thought aways back, you were in Indiana. Anyhoo, our black residency here is less than 1%, and I doubt any would batt an eye here at her sweatshirt.

    I could be wrong!

Frank, I haven't lived in Indiana since moving away in June 1968.
    We live in northeastern Florida.

Thing is, most people don't read what's written on coats, t-shirts, sweatshirts or baseball caps......but I do.
Actually, where you live, you really wouldn't know the reaction of people unless some wore this sweatshirt to a Mall.

Well your tread topic was whether the sweatshirt you described is cool or not. My opinion is that it is definitely not "cool"...and it is intended to stir up reactions in others who read it. Whether those reactions are good or bad...depends on the person reading it.

True. Actually, at the time, I didn't see it as bad, but after talking to a few people, including two older Black ladies, I changed my mind.
