Sure isn't like the past years when it was hard for a person to be a "couch potato". Today we have remotes: TV, VCR (if anyone still has one of those), Sound System, CD Player and Blue-Ray DVD Player. Still have to get up and put a dvd or cd into the player, but sooner or later......... Electric Can Openers and Knife Sharpeners. No more using the old hand can opener or sliding a knife up and down a sharpening tool in the kitchen. With all the battery, and air, operated tools today, working in construction, or even doing home stuff, can be a whiz! Drilling, nailing, stapling is a cinch. Heck, with our new Chromecast, we can even operate our tv with an iPhone, not TV Remote. Drive to the grocery store, don't have to anymore if you don't want to. Order online and have groceries delivered to you. We have really become a society of easy, high-tech stuff to do things for us. Shoot, my step-parents, deceased for years, would've been totally shocked about a lot of things of today. What about yours? What do you think about all this high-tech stuff and gadgets? To tell everyone the truth, wife and I LOVE them!
Well I don't think its a good thing Cody, idleness is not good for so many reasons Our health and well being - our drive, youngsters coming up emulating all this slovenly attitude to 'life' can't be a good thing, but as you say Cody, its just my opinion
Our electric can opener died on us a couple years ago and I purchased a manual one. A lot cheaper, dependable and an energy saver to boot. I remember how when younger we made toast in the oven before our mother purchased an electric toaster. Drat! We couldn't do the things to our bread in the toaster that we did in the oven because the butter would melt and carry the sugar along with to the bottom of the toaster. What a mess and later found out it was dangerous and could start a fire inside the toaster. Doing things remotely with the exception of the TV just doesn't appeal to me because it does make you lazy physically and mentally tiring IMO. Every time I see the commercial where the foot is used to open the rear door I just shake my head and think next there will be a sliding panel that comes out and you just lay your packages down and it retracts inside. Mark my words it's coming.
@Cody Fousnaugh "What do you think about all this high-tech stuff and gadgets?" I think they are responsible, in part, for the epidemic of obesity enveloping us. IN PART. A sad commentary of life in America today. Like anything folks do by choice, gambling for example, coupling the easy-life to obesity is a direct spin-off. Less exercise, same or more amount of food consumed, apathy, sloth, gluttony, and we wind up at today. No saint, I admit to being guilty of all of those, but nonetheless, I am not obese. Frank
Well, being the fact that much more of the younger generations have all "techi" stuff and many of them consider a Fitness Center their "home away from home" (spending hours upon hours there) and most of them are really fit.....I don't see these things hurting them. On the other hand, many of us don't get the body "workout" anymore, like they do, it can be obvious whose today's "techi" things can really hurt.
I love my gadgets and I'm not obese at all, I'm probably on the thin side in fact. In California it seems everyone works out, I really don't see too many obese people here, I do in the Midwest though but this is just my personal observation. Also and I hope I won't be called racist for this but the fattest people I see in California are the Hispanics that work pretty hard all day and probably don't sit on the couch playing with their gadgets. My gardener isn't thin at all, neither was Mária my cleaning lady. I don't have one now but I did 8 years ago when my ex wasn't my ex. I think you can enjoy modern gadgets if you make sure you get some exercise and the young people that I see regularly do.
You're not a racist for saying that, because I seen the same when I lived in So. California. We love our gadgets to!
I think that has to do with winters, mostly. For most people, there isn't much to do for exercise in the winter. Even for those who have to shovel snow, that's not the kind of exercise that makes for slim bodies. Yeah, there are things that can be done outdoors, but they are not for everyone, and it's cold out there.
I wasn't fat when I lived in the Midwest either, nor on the East Coast....and believe me it's not my great metabolism, because mine always sucked. I just know not to eat so much that I'll gain weight.
Some people just stay skinny their entire life. My step-mom was that way. There were times during the summer when she'd have my step-dad fire-up the coal/wood furnace in the basement. Just my understanding, but there are also those that keep weight off from smoking. Cigarettes and coffee replaced food.
I talked to a guy who owned a super-looking new Cigarette Boat (racing) at the same boat storage we had ours. He kept it in a "barn"/garage type storage. He had a different one, but it was stolen off of an outside space he had it on. He bought a complete, and I do mean "complete", Security System for the new boat. He could monitor the boat, and "barn" on his computer at home as well as monitor it on his iPhone anywhere he'd go. There were water-proof camera's installed in different areas of the boat and inside the "barn"/garage.
Not great Frank - once they get to their 20s/30s, they start working out Up to then, they're glued to mobile phones and computers etc @Frank Sanoica
