The things we remember and those we forget... I can remember things from over 50 years ago with great clarity...I can remember my first day at school..I can remember my mothers co-op dividend number, I can remember the address of every house we ever lived in..I can remember the date and time of the birth of all my siblings , I can remember our old house phone number ..and loads more stuff ....but now I can't even remember my own mobile phone number...or half the the passwords for online...without writing them down somewhere in code In my defence I do have a highly stressful job and I suppose there's only a finite amount of room in my wee head to store everything lol...but in all seriousness I know it's the same story for most people as we age .... What do you remember?..
My memory is a bit of a mixed bag, I remember a lot from the past, though my middle years are all jumbled up with a rag bag of several mid-life crises and memories of things that didn't happen, ..... but over the last decade my short term and ability to lay down new memory has improved a lot, I can remember my 3 mobile phone numbers and new passwords etc. I feel this is due in part to having a virtually stress free life nowadays, and maybe taking aids such as blueberries and other supplements at times. Regarding your memory issues @holly I would agree it's down to your very stressful work/life situation. Both my daughters who have always had excellent memories are finding, that like you they are forgetting passwords and other short term memory losses as well, which is down to the very stressful lives they are living at the moment, I believe.
Agree holly, its frustrating at times - most times ! It is Holly isn't it .................. ......................... Seriously though, thank goodness we can remember those great days we loved so much Not sure I want to remember too much of today ............. shopping list would be handy to remember to take with me !
I remember every goofball thing my hubby has done and I remember to trot them out in every dispute minor or major
Ooo yea Misty - its all floodin' back ! Now, listen 'ere Fabs me darlin' - remember when ..................
Most often, I don't remember what my mother looked like. Not a clear picture anyhow. Since my dad's house burned to the ground, I don't have a trove of family pictures that I might otherwise have so, while I do have some photos of my mother that I got from various relatives, they were all pictures of her when she was younger than she was when I was around, and I don't remember her looking like that. Sometimes though, and once in awhile in a dream, I can picture her, but I can't just visualize her on demand as I can my father, who was still alive when I was an adult. My memory has never worked well for numbers. It was rare that I could look up a seven-digit phone number up and dial it without having to look down at the number again. There are times when I have to think about my Social Security number, and I can remember having to go downstairs and look at the curb in order to write my return address, as addresses were all painted at the curbs in Buena Park, California when I lived there.
As we age we do tend to lose bits and pieces of our short term memory...and in stressful times I believe this would worsen. Our long term memory will often be clearer to us as we age. But we are all individuals so this may differ in degree for each of us. I find I had to write down my debit card number and tuck it away in a safe place in my purse so I would have it in case I forget it when I'm using it. Now if I just don't forget where I hid it. I also have to remind myself to check the Calendar because now that I don't have many set schedules...I will not bother to even worry about what the day or date is sometimes and last year I was late with a few Birthday cards because of this.
The calendar on my iPad remembers all important dates for me, and we can set an alert if we think we might need a reminder. When we have a doctor appointment, I put it in the calendar app right away; so we always know when the appointment is going to be, plus we can look back and see what days we went if we need to look that up for some reason. Now that I have a phone that stores the phone numbers, I really don't even try to remember anyone's phone number anymore. Some of the things in my long term memory I remember fine; but some parts of my life are things that I think I purposely blacked out and only pop up now and then when something triggers that memory. My short term memory was getting pretty bad; but now it is improving , too. I think that the coconut oil is helping, and I have not had to ask Bobby to tell me a forgotten word for a while now.
I have been losing words for the past few years, and that's annoying. Sometimes they are simple, everyday words like, "I'm looking for my... the thing I pound nails with."
EXACTLY ! ! And I can visualize it in my mind, and am pantomiming pounding a nail to Bobby as I am frantically trying to remember what that elusive tool is called . (You should see me when I forget "weed-eater", and I am sure that sometimes Bobby delays telling me the word just to watch my comical show of acting it out. ) I am sure that I have forgotten that very exact same word you mentioned, Ken and called it the same thing you did when trying to describe it ! !
Even more maddening is that I can often remember the more complicated words that I use to describe the simple word that I have lost.
Yes that's more precisely my problem....it's also very embarrassing in conversation particularly at work However the coconut oil can't come to my rescue because I'm allergic to coconut...
Yes the missing words/names can be difficult, you can end up in a conversation saying "do you know that actor with blonde hair who was in that movie about so and so" and on it goes.....
