Every time wife and I go to some restaurants, like our local buffet, or to some stores, like Walmart, we see a number of obese, and mean heavy, women. For some reason, don't see as many men like this as women. Wife and I are somewhat overweight, but nothing like what we see. It's almost shocking.

Thing is, from my medical background, not all obesity is from eating too much and/or the wrong kinds of foods. Some obesity is from medications a person takes. Of course, "medications" isn't what the public thinks when they see a person who is really heavy, they have overeating in their minds.

We use to know a lady, my wife knew her from work, that was pretty obese. When I would pick up my wife from work, I would see this lady and she was definitely obese. Any person could see it was taking a toll on her back and ankles. She wound up having surgery on her back, but still didn't loose much weight. We really felt sorry for her.

What do you think when you see a person this size. Some people would call this Thread "judging a person and that's wrong", but wife and I call it an "observation" and just wonder if America will ever get any better.

    Since I'm a skinny minny, I think....thank goodness I eat healthy.

Yes, there are a few meds that can put on weight but that's not what the problem is with the majority of obese people. I've traveled all over and it seems like the country with the most obese people is the US.

I really hate to say this, but you are absolutely right. It's an American thing.

There was a young couple sitting at a table next to us at Cracker Barrel Restaurant last night, who just had a baby last week. The mother, father and MIL were obese. Have to wonder what their child will grow up to look like. The mother's face was beautiful and sure didn't match the rest of her body. Other than the weight, this couple was very, very nice.

Then, as we were paying for the meal at the register, another obese older lady was buying three large Hershey Chocolate Bars. She told her husband "I love these".

  5. Well, I have a number of 'takes' on this.
First, the Lord God gave us brains to use- and that includes having opinions and even expressing opinions. There's a big difference between expressing an opinion and criticizing or insulting people.
Second, I don't understand the obsession about weight- I mean if a person engaged in various other health risks, they generally wouldn't react the same way. As an example, if you see a guy out in the street using a jackhammer, he probably wouldn't scream that you were 'vision-shaming' if you offered him a pair of safety goggles.
Third, maybe those of us who aren't overweight should be 'offended' by sites that show pictures of women who are around 100+ pounds overweight and said to be 'this is what REAL women look like!' My concern, though, is the impression it gives to young kids- that obesity is what they should be aiming for.

In my opinion, people need to become reacquainted the concepts of meals and mealtimes. Not only does obesity increase a number of health risks, the awful eating habits
I've seen in recent years can cause health problems even if people aren't overweight.

It has become an increasing problem over here too
Its simply the variety of different foods offered now, cooked in minutes or no cooking involved at all
I've never been a big eater, I'm happy to have just enough
I guess for some it is comfort eating and that is very sad
