Nope, because it's not a day for celebrating here for obvious reasons..it's an American/Mexican celebration...however it's my husbands' birthday...so we'll be celebrating that instead..
It's a Mexican holiday. I'm not Mexican. What the heck, I like Mexican food. I had some yesterday and again today. Probably not tomorrow.
My town has a large Mexican presence. I love Mexican food and always enjoyed watching the senoritas dance. I see nothing wrong with taking part in their celebration, nor in them joining in on our July 4th. events.
Don't know how many people here celebrated Cinco de Mayo, but the restaurant we went to was absolutely full at 5PM. The parking lot was full and Officer's were having cars park in a field across the street from the restaurant. We have a Handi-Cap Placard (for me), but still had to park across the street. Wife and I really do believe that many young folks left work early and it looked like there were some retirees there as well. This restaurant has the best Cinco de Mayo entertainment in the area. A Mexican dude dressed in Mariachi clothes and singing to recorded music. Traditional Mexican dancing w/ ladies and men wearing traditional Mexican dancing clothes. There were also men and women dressed in Traditional Aztec Indian attire doing a Fire Dance. And, a DJ playing Mexican "Party" music. The dancers and DJ were both outside in a parking lot by the restaurant. Had dinner, which isn't the best. Have another favorite Mexican Restaurant for non-Cinco de Mayo. It was pretty windy yesterday at 20 mph wind gusts and a fairly cool temperature. Fortunately, we had been to the restaurant before on Cinco de Mayo and seen the dancers outside, so decided to leave. The other years we've been there have been a lot less wind and much warmer. Anyway, have camera video clips and photos of the dancers from previous years. Basically it was fun, but would've been much more fun w/o the wind and cool temps.
I wonder how many Mexicans living in the U.S. know. I might ask as well How many native born Americans know why the 4th of July is celebrated.
Sure I know the history etc. of Cinco de Mayo- but I'm not Mexican/Hispanic. And yes, the 4th of July, too.
I know nothing about cinco de mayo and don't really care. If I were going to move to Mexico I would make the effort to learn their customs as those who move here should learn ours.
I'm not a history buff nor Mexican but I googled it out of curiosity myself. Cinco de Mayo is celebrated for the Mexican Army's win over France in 1862 in the Battle of Puebla. Fourth of July aka Independence Day in the US is celebrated when the first 13 colonies of the US claimed independence from France on July 4, 1776. Of course I knew this my most of my life.
We definitely enjoy the evening!! Head to a local Mexican Restaurant for a good dinner and one or two margaritas. The restaurant has two parking lots and one of them is roped off for a DJ and customers to watch traditional Mexican dancing and Mexican people dressed in Aztec Indian attire and dance. There is also a Mexican singer inside the restaurant in traditional Mexican Mariachi dress singing. It's a very enjoyable evening, if the weather is right outside for the dancers. There are so many people that come to this, that local law enforcement has to direct traffic.
