My last thought on this is even though we think or say we're okay living out of our comfort zones which for most us would be "white"...deep down I think we all have some prejudices wether we admit it or not.

  2. I've never been in Compton or East L.A., but if the third example you mentioned is El Paso- 'been there, done that.' I'll quickly add I didn't move there- we kinda got stranded.
The youngest of my kids had it the worst- the upper-elementary/middle-school conducted its everyday school business in Spanish. While my youngster got along well with most of the other students, it was the staff that was the problem: my 12-year-old was constantly ridiculed, bullied, harassed, because she'd never learned Spanish. It became so extreme that I withdrew her from school and homeschooled. And that was only one example.

As for me personally, I got along ok with individuals in the neighborhood, although most did not speak English. One guy who did said most of the families had lived in El Paso for generations- most were not immigrants. So it's not too surprising I recently noted only around 40% of the school's students are proficient in English.

While my kids got the brunt of it in the neighborhood, my only negative experiences personally were with the police. It was rare that I could walk a few blocks to the grocery store or pick up my child from the Boys & Girls Club without being stopped, questioned, my I.D. run through the system- 'Why are you here?' "I live here." "oh. why?" The hairiest experience was when I was surrounded by a half-dozen or more police cars and they all rushed at me; I'd just cashed an income-tax refund check, had hundreds of dollars in my pocket, and was afraid if they searched me they'd think I was a drug dealer or something. If you've heard the expression 'driving while Black,' my experiences were 'walking while non-Hispanic.'

That's the problem we have in the US, white people can be bullied by non whites and it's okay but if a Hispanic child is bullied by whites it's in the newspapers and TV.

Therin lies the problem...we all should be treated equally.

Unfortunately, being treated equally will never happen.

I know and that's why we will always have problems.

I just looked it up. The towns name is El Cenozoic. It is just south of Laredo across the Rio Grande River from Mexico. The mayor chose Spanish as the primary language.
How would any of like to live in an area where you'd have to hear Spanish all the time? You'd have to learn the language or move away.
As for us, we wouldn't move there in the first place. Like anyone else, that would be our choice.

Funny, my wife told me today "your Thread sounds like one of those pretty controversial ones that some folks would refuse to comment on."
I told her "true, but there are areas/cities in the U.S. that primarily consist of one race."

When I lived in Edcouch, Texas, town council meetings would always begin in English. Then, about five minutes in, everyone was speaking Spanish.
