I dearly love eggnog, and each year I look forward to its appeaance in the grocery stores. It used to be that I only saw eggnog on the shelves around Christmas and New Years; and then it started apearing around Thanksgiving. So , I was seriously surprised ---and happy--- when I went to the store for my coffee cream last week, and there was eggnog on the shelves, and it is only early October ! We have become accustomed to seeing the Christmas decorations on the store shelves at the same time as the Halloween witches and skeletons, with a few Thanksgiving turkeys thrown into the mix; but I DO think that they are starting pretty early with the eggnog. Since I love eggnog, that is fine with me, but since it has all that sugar and is basically not a healthy food, that also means that I have to stare at it longingly and not buy any for a month or two longer this year. I allow myself a quart for the holiday season, and most of that gets used in my coffee in place of the plain old half-and-half. If you have never tried eggnog in your coffee; it is awesomely delicious ! (Hint @Joe Riley, you might want to start thinking about eggnog coffee for the cafe this holiday season)
Thanks for the eggnog in coffee tip, Yvonne! I will have to try that, and maybe introduce it over at "Hi-GoodBye Coffee"!
You may not believe this but I have no idea of what eggnog is. I have read eggnog in some articles and particularly in forums but I am keeping myself guessing. From what I understand, it is, of course, made of egg with some liquor. But what I'm amused about it is the occasion. Is that for the yuletide season or Halloween or Thanksgiving? Our contemporary of the eggnog is the fruit cake. It usually surfaces at this time, October and peaks in December for the Christmas season. One friend who makes fruit cakes say it has a life of 6 months but it is best eaten after 2 months of fermentation. As with the eggnog, maybe I can have a taste of that when I go to the US.
If I read Yvonne, correctly, it is around at Christmas time, but this year she noticed it made an appearance on the shelves, in early October.
Oh Yvonne, I don't know if you ever make eggnog with alcohol in it but if you do I have an alternative that may interest you! It reminds me of eggnog. I'm not sure it's healthier but probably. And it's probably much less fattening (except alcohol is sugar I think). It's a Brandy Alexander made with Unsweetened Almond Milk instead of the cream and egg in Eggnog. I don't drink as a rule but on rare occasions I will have one glass. Warning: 1 glass will put you right to sleep I read that nutmeg is a natural remedy for insomnia and I use quite a bit because I like the flavor of nutmeg. Mix the top 3 ingredients and then add ice. Stir and then, lastly, sprinkle nutmeg on top (I stir that in too). BRANDY ALEXANDER 2 Jiggers of Unsweetened Almond Milk (Whole Foods 365 Brand is my favorite) 1 Jigger of Creme de Cocoa 1 Jigger of Brandy 1/2 glass of ice (optional but it waters it down a little…i like that) Nutmeg sprinkled on top (amount depends on your affection for nutmeg)
That sounds delicious, @Lara Moss ! We don't drink anything with alcohol anymore; but I do remember that anything with alcohol in it would put me right to sleep, and I used to mix rum with lemon juice, honey, and hot water, and drink a mug of that if I got a bad cold and needed to sleep it off overnight. Now, I just get the eggnog from the store and drink a little sip from my coffee mug, and then add the coffee and have the rest instead of cream. It lasts me longer through the "Eggnog Season" that way. @Corie Henson, eggnog is a rich (and delicious) mixture of milk, cream, sugar and eggs, all blended together. Then you add a bit of cinnamon and nutmeg into that , depending on how much you like those spices. I often add cinnamon, nutmeg and cardomum into my morning coffee, just because I love the taste of those spices, and it kind of reminds me of the eggnog coffee. I think that it is traditionally a Christmas/New Years holiday drink that is made with some kind of alcohol added, but I just have mine plain like it comes from the grocery store.
Good find there Joe! I use 2 jiggers of the Almond Milk instead of just one though because it dilutes the alcohol for me. Otherwise, it's too strong. Call it the girly version if you will
Eggnog Christmas Quote “Futurama” Xmas Story (1999) Fry: Every Christmas my Mom would get a fresh goose, for gooseburgers, and my Dad would whip up his special eggnog out of bourbon and ice cubes.
Last year at Don Quiote Supermarket I saw reduced sugar eggnog and was delighted! I too love eggnog and in our family only I like eggnog so I buy only the quart size to indulge myself for the holidays! I love the thick and heavy eggnog and I add my own cinnamon and nutmeg for that special touch! I love eggnog and like you have to watch my sugar intake, so when I saw the reduced sugar I was ecstatic! Here is a sugar free eggnog recipe if interested that's simple. Here is a healthy eggnog recipe for you. Enjoy and you're welcome in advance.
I love eggnog! Unfortunately there's never enough to go around my big family. We have tried making our own, and it tasted great, but the consistency wasn't to my liking; It just wasn't thick enough. I wonder how I can thicken it up. I'd like to try making it again. There's nothing better than ice cold eggnog, with just a splash of rum!
@Brittany Houser, My grandmother would make eggnogg for the family, but she always set aside about a half gallon to which she would add several extra egg yolks. It always made it yellower, thicker, and much richer. I've never tasted a store bought eggnogg anything like it. But, as Yvonne says, it is fattening. I used to fix it when I needed to gain weight.
