What I don't know though is how accurate of a portrayal it is of 1950's East End London. It's very different than the '50s I grew up in Pittsburgh. Mrs Lawson having a black baby when she had a white husband would have garnered more shock and disapproval here I think...but I don't know.
It is accurate Chrissy, will have to see how Mrs Lawson gets on with this she should go through a lot of shunning, if 'accuracy' continues
I'll let you know... Mr Lawson just bought the baby to the clinic because of a cough, and it's shown as an older white man tenderly and with so much love holding the tiny black hand in his. I haven't seen any shunning or shock yet but it's still early in the show.
Here is a scene from the very first episode....no birth in this one but does show a naked pregnant tummy. There was some drama later concerning the mom and baby # 24...
I just finished the first season and the Christmas Special. Wiping my tears.... I think every episode made me shed a few tears. I really recommend this to anyone who hasn't seen it.....it's more than just midwives...they are nurses who help with the dying and the sick also.
Yes I watch this show! I probably have not seen all episodes since I catch it hit and miss on PBS. I have no interest in babies, childbirth or children yet I still like the human interest of this show. They do a good job without being preachy. Characters will evolve and some will leave. There have been a few cliché's such as when an older nurse shows up set in her ways. No one likes her and she comes on too strong but in a few episodes they decide she's cool and she fits in with the younger nurses. I like Chummy too. If her arrogant pain of a mother hasn't shown up yet. Wait for her. She's a real ass.
In your clip Chrissy, I found the Cockney accent to be false - put on There are not many 'genuine' Cockneys left now, but actors should be able to master it As it was just a clip, I would hope there are some good Cockney accents going on in there
I pretty much understand what's being said and I know there are some English accents I find harder. Also in that clip, only the father and the daughter would be speaking with a cockney accent I think...the midwives and the nuns aren't from there. The daughter was too easy to understand so you're probably right on that. I should turn off closed captioning and see how well I understand it.
Ha ha...at least their spelling shows where they're from on a forum if they don't say. Well at least narrows it down to Canada, Uk or Australia.
I'm on Season 3 now, still loving it...I'm going to be sad when this binge marathon ends. I had to look up what Horlick was exactly...seems it's similar to our ovaltine.
Well I learned something new today....I just assumed the nuns were Catholic on "call the midwife" but there were a few things I thought odd but just assumed they did things differently then or in the UK. Seems these nuns are Anglican!
I've come across that working in the Catholic section. When England split from the Roman Catholic Church, creating the Anglican Church, the Catholic religious orders and institutes became Anglican orders and institutes, usually retaining the same name.
