Back in May, 1972, having signed on to take over an ARCO service station in Las Vegas, I had successfully (almost) moved all our belongings there from Chicago. The Dealership required that I attend Dealer Training in El Monte, CA, for a month. Driving that long dreary desert stretch Sunday night, then back Friday, I couldn't help but wonder at this turn-off I saw each time: In California, I was always sorely tempted to have a look, but never really had spare time. Years later, when that ungainly spelling popped into my head, I sought answers. Here they are: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zzyzx,_California Soda Springs has a most interesting history there. If you've little to do, and nowhere to do it, I encourage you to peruse this unusual story. Frank
What an interesting article, and a strange name for sure, @Frank Sanoica . Thank you for sharing that with us. It is surprising that he could masquerade as a doctor for so many years and not be in trouble for doing so. it doesn't sounds like he actually harmed anyone , except that he took a lot of money and didn't really help anyone.
Very interesting. I guess that proves that if you are brazen enough, you can convince a lot of people of a lot of things.
From the very first time I saw that sign, I wondered how it would be pronounced. ZZYZX phonetically would be "Z I ZZ IX". I imagine the 3rd "Z" is silent, so "ZICKS". Frank
@Shirley Martin I must say that, given the volatility of your observation, and knowing it came from a kind-hearted lady, it's rather, errr, well, ....morbid quality, can be understood if you are willing to reveal the sort of "lubricant" which prompted it....... Frank
When we lived in Southern California and drove to Las Vegas, we seen the same sign. Have to admit, it does look odd. Never checked it out, because we wanted to get to the beer and slot machines in Vegas! Haven't been to Vegas since 2005. Would sure like to go back, but finances only allow one trip a year and our next one is planned for northern Colorado next summer.
@Shirley Martin You've clinched it! And to think I often refer to imbibing as "lubrication"......... Frank
@Shirley Martin Easy now, girl...... I have never done that with a lady before while betrothed, or done anything else for that matter, but lately, well,.........
