Back in what was maybe the end of the Hippie Era, I lived in north Idaho, and in the summertime, I worked in the hops, and later in Christmas trees. It was full-time work for a few months each year, and since ours was a pretty poor community, there were a lot of the local people that helped out with both of these. So, one summer, we were helping to plant a new field of hops, and there was one couple who worked there who were called "Rock" and (his wife) "Tree". They sometimes talked about their two little kids, who were named "A" and "B". We always wondered how they managed to do that, and if somewhere on the government birth and marriage records, there were real names for this family. Apparently, they did have real names, and eventually grew out of the Hippie culture, and remained in the area. Still, I was surprised when my son informed me that one of our most well-known and respected deputies was actually "Rock" ! He now has retired from the sheriff's office and operates one of the finest restaurants in town, and probably very few people are there who actually know his background story.
I suppose the most baffling of all to me is naming their sons with the father's name followed by a number As in George 1 - George 11 - George 111 etc, that - I just don't get !
One of my grandmothers was born in 1905, when Teddy Roosevelt was President. Her dad was going to name her "Theodore Roosevelt Smith". Surprise, it's a girl. Named the poor child "Rosa Velt Smith". She went by Rose.
Several years ago there was a football player named WARREN PEACE and a basketball player named BASKERVILLE HOLMES. A local business owner was named OKLA HOMER SMITH. One thing about strange names; they are more apt to be remembered.
