Just be careful with getting a dog like Pickles. Ive come close to tripping over him so many times. He follows me around the house and is always underfoot...I even had some close calls.
This was my first thought, too, and it is something that would be a very real concern for someone with eyesight problems. I have come close to tripping over either Chipper or Tootsie also, and with my bad balance, if I trip, I am going down face first with no hope of stopping it. Puppies are adorable, but take a LOT of work and cleaning up after (another hazard for poor eyesight), and they are a lot more apt to get underfoot and trip someone. I know it probably does not sound as appealing; but my suggestion would be to check with your local animal control, and adopt a medium-size older dog, already housetrained, large enough for your husband to see easily, and not so large that he can knock him over. We have a facebook group for this area that lists lost and found dogs, and also the ones that are for adoption, so probably you would have a group or website that shows that near you, too. I see so many dogs that are at the shelter that are skin and bones when they are brought in, and others that are just older dogs that no one wants anymore. I know that you have a heart for helping people , @Babs Hunt , and saving a dog’s life might Also be a way to give your sweetie some company when you are gone from home.
I agree with @Yvonne Smith ...puppies are adorable but can be a pain in the butt. If I ever got another dog, I'd go for an older one from a shelter. I feel so sorry for them...poor doggies.
I say Puppy...but they are all just big puppies to me. I know with my husband's central vision loss he will still have side vision but one thing I have learned about the AMD he has is that it is best to contrast things. So like a black and white dog or dark brown and white dog will be the best color for a dog for us. And yes I do want an older and calm dog who doesn't just sit there all day but who will not take all our energy just keeping up with him/her. I also want an older and gentle dog because I do not not want to take a brand new puppy, let him/her get attached to us and then we die on him/her. I'm also not into potting training all over again or having a brand new puppy chew up everything in our cottage. I just know that after the way my husband showed his heart last night with our toy Puppy....the man needs a real dog and hopefully that is the way God feels about it too. I was looking on PetFinder.com this morning and found some small to medium size (better I think for us) black and white adult dogs but since we are going to the Urologist's in a little while I can't really get into the research like I would like to do. And I want to make sure I'm not jumping the gun here too. I know my husband really wants a dog and I believe now is the time to give him his heart's desire on this because I think it will also lift his spirits from all he has been going through. He loves all animals...but he always had dogs and a couple of cats too before we met and married. I'm going to trust the Lord to take care of my allergies in this and also let Him show us the perfect dog for us too. I'm believing there is the perfect dog out there for us and that now is the time we will find him or her.
I am happy for you. i do know the relief and feeling. I remember waiting a long week one time to hear my own test result. I didn't either. Congratulations to your honey and to you. Time for a wee celebration.
I expect he is quite pleased as well .... but seriously I am glad to hear it, faith must have kicked it out.
Dear Diary, It's so nice to have nothing to worry about today. I don't even have to go to my daughter's today and help her do more unpacking and with the grandkids. They have been going through stomach viruses this week and the one year old is still having problems with really loose stools. So I'm staying away until everyone is well again. It's Fall... although we can't tell that by our weather over here yet...still having temperations in the 90's during the day and just slightly cooler in the evenings. We should be seeing some changes soon though and I'm looking forward to the cooler weather and spending more time outdoors when this happens. Spring and Fall are my favorite seasons, it would just be nice if they lasted a little longer. No having to worry about what to cook today either....there are enough encores in the fridge to more than fill our bellies today. Loving this Friday.
Dear Diary, had my laugh for today too. Stepped outside for a minute and there was my Honey and our next door neighbor "party barging" right in our front yard. LOL
