@Ken Anderson Long ago, I was an NRA member, and believe I read some of his writing in the NRA magazine. That prompted me to buy several of his books. His philosophy is basically that criminals gravitate toward the victims least able to defend themselves, and thus concludes that only firearm-based self defense provides the most universal protection. He always explained that owning a firearm is definitely not for everyone. Frank
He had a regular column in Backwoods Home, which I've subscribed to for years. Unfortunately, they are discontinuing their print edition and I doubt that I'll read the Kindle edition.
I suppose nothing but taking a safety course and buying a fire arm and convincing my wife I need cone. That last one not necessary but might keep peace in the family.
@Bill Boggs What the gun-fearing folks cannot understand is the fact that guns are little different than any other "tool" useful for self-defense. Guns are tools, just as are knives, clubs, shovels, etc., anything which might be used to defend oneself from imminent bodily attack. Guns offer the advantage of immediate cessation of attack, whereas other tools work much more slowly, and leave much doubt regarding ability of utilization, and effectiveness. Perhaps their immediacy is one of the reasons many fear guns. Frank
Guns are equalizers, as far as defense goes. It doesn't matter how mean, tough and ugly the attacker might be, the homeowner who has a gun and knows how to use it is his equal, or better. Even if the intruder is armed, the armed homeowner has the advantage because he (or she) knows the layout of the house.
@Ken Anderson True, but both participants have advantages: that of the intruder is (usually) the element of surprise, he/she being hyperventilated and loaded with adrenalin, while the homeowner may have just been awakened and needs time to achieve cognizance of the situation. Ayoob was always very insistent on these considerations. Frank
True enough, I suppose. I don't expect to ever have to use my guns for anything but target practice. I feel better having them, however.
