Don't get me wrong. This is not a vegetarian's thread. I just remembered that we used to have steak that has no meat. And how is that? We fry the sliced potatoes. When cooked, we would add some sliced onions and soy sauce. Turning off the stove after a minute, that is the steakless steak that is a good match with buttered toast.

Do you have some ideas about dishes that are cooked with meat but can be cooked without meat?

We have meatless meals occasionally. Just yesterday we cleaned out the refrigerator of leftover vegetables and added a small baked potato for each of us. It was good but I prefer to have some kind of dead animal on my plate along with the vegetables.

I've been vegetarian for 35 years, so I've had a little bit of practice. I make quite a lot of curries and chillis - you can use just about anything in these types of dishes.

A meal without meat is like drinking near beer. It's the same color as real beer, but.....

Don't even try to take my medium-rare Prime Rib dinner from me!

With the prices of meat getting higher all of the time, we have had to re-adjust how much meat that we are going to eat with our food. Rather than being a large main part of the meal, now we just use a smaller amount, mostly enough to add flavor to the food.
In meals where we have more meat, it is usually chicken, since that is one of the least expensive. I watch for hamburger to be on sale, and then we can have things like macaroni with hamburger and tomato sauce and veggies; but sometimes, it is just stirfry and rice with a dab of some kind of meat to add flavor.
It seemed strange at first, since we have been used to having meat as a main part of the meal; but pretty much we have gotten used to the idea of having less meat.

I have been a vegetarian on and off for a long time, still have the occasional chicken, but recently not even that, I also make lots of chillis and curries and don't miss meat at all in fact I feel generally better on a vegetarian diet, but I am not puritanical about it and will eat meat if there is no other option.

I am not doctrinaire about these things, it's my choice and I'm quite happy with it. I would never criticise anyone for their own preferences but it's been more than 15 years since I've been ridiculed for being a veggie...

Yes times have changed and its become accepted as a healthy option nowadays, and most eating places have vegetarian dishes. My youngest daughter has always been vegetarian from childhood, and my wife was virtually a veggie as well, so its always been part of my life.

    I could never go meatless!

I love to eat animal flesh, fin fish and shell fish, as well as vegetables, grains, fruit, nuts and anything else I find appetizing. It's my choice. I don't need to eat meat every single day, sometimes I do, sometimes I don't.

Never, would I criticize a person who won't eat meat or meat products (anything with a face, as my cousins child explained) and never would I tolerate being criticized for being carnivore.

Didn't mean to sound as I was making fun of veggies. Just stating my opinion. When you're born and raised in the rural mid west, sometimes meat and bread is the meal.

Have to totally AGREE with Ike about this........my Jr. High and High School years were spent being raised on a hog farm in northeastern Indiana. Our freezer always had pork in it and some beef from local butcher. I'm sure glad my wife likes some meat, but loves shrimp and lobster. Nothing against vegetarian's, but I sure couldn't live with one.

My doctor wants me to go meatless. I do eat meat sometimes though especially now for I've found a good recipe for fall off the bone soft pot roast meats! Doctor wants me to loose weight. I fasted and didn't loose any weight, so I'm a bit disappointed now about loosing weight.o_O I'm going to have a pot roast if I can afford it for Saint Patrick's Day, for the corn beef got too high to buy for Saint Patrick's Day. I hope I can find some pot roast meat to buy on sale for I really like pot roast, just a small one for Saint Patrick's Day!:)
