Thanksgiving Day is rolling around. Have you made your menu for 2015 Thanksgiving yet? We have decided on a simple pot roast with carrots, celery and onions with mashed potatoes. For dessert it'll be just custard pie, my Mother's favorite pie. We haven't made any plans. We usually have roast chicken with cornbread stuffing, cranberry sauce and vegetables. I'm sure there will be sweet potato pie for dessert. There's just the two of us so we'll have plenty of leftovers.
I sort of like the traditional turkey but they don't sell small turkeys in the stores anymore, just the hormone-induced monster turkeys, and I don't feel comfortable eating those things. It may be too late this year since the few places we've checked are already sold out for Thanksgiving but, next year, I think we'll be buying a normal turkey from a local farm. Some years, we have roast chicken because real chickens are easier to come by, and they're closer to the right size. I would be happy with ham anytime but my wife doesn't like it, so we have it only rarely.
We have no Thanksgiving Day here but I guess there will soon be. Halloween is already creeping inside our tradition and there are villages here that practice trick or treating for maybe 10 years or so. With the social media, we now can see the costumes of kids whether in the urban or rural areas. Last year I had seen in one hotel the poster of a Thanksgiving turkey where you can place your order and the cooked turkey is delivered to you. It was very expensive although I had forgotten the exact price. In our home, I cannot say that we would welcome that American tradition of Thanksgiving but we never can tell.
Our Ninja roaster is just perfect for a roasted chicken with stuffing; so we may do that if it is just Bobby and myself. However, now that Robin is back home again, we might have Thanksgiving along with her; so if we do that, then we will get a small turkey and roast that. Personally, I love turkey, and do not mind having leftovers afterwards; however, since Bobby has worked in rescue missions for many years, and turkeys seem to be something that always got donated, he does not have the same love of turkey as I do. I think that ham is his favorite. Sometimes, we get a small ham for New Years Day, and that way, we both have things we enjoy. Cranberries are what makes the dinner for me, and since Bobby does not like them, and neither does Robin, that means that all of the cranberries are MINE ! ! If we have dessert, it would be sweet potato pie if it is just us, and cherry pie if Robin has Thanksgiving day with us. (She hates any kind of sweet potato or squash). And lots of whipped cream for on the pie, of course. Turkeys are on sale at Kroger for 79 cents a lb; so the price is not much different from last year. Thanksgiving is a tradition that was started by the first settlers that came to America, and it was shared as a gesture of friendship with the native Indians; so it is a holiday that is uniquely our own, @Corie Henson . It would be meaningless to other countries, except as a day that has a special feast menu, possibly.
We will have the usual: Roast turkey with cranberry dressing, corn, mashed potatoes (with lumps I hope) , probably peas, or something as abominable, cranberry sauce, rolls and pumpkin pie for dessert. We are actually going to have Thanksgiving BREAKFAST, because I have to go into work at 2:00. I told my daughter I would only come to her house if we could have everything traditional. I'm even supplying the turkey. I cannot have a Thanksgiving meal without turkey!
Lumpy mashed potatoes. My dad would always raise a holler if the mashed potatoes had lumps. I would argue that as long as the lumps were potatoes, who cares.
My last 11 years since my husband died have been spent at my daughter's for Thanksgiving. There were maybe 2 years that I went to Illinois and had Thanksgiving at my son's. It will be a traditional meal but on the gourmet side....Daughter is a great cook but I also help.

I will post our details once I find out what exactly we are having. Her stuffing recipe is the best though and she makes that every year...its labor intensive but oh so good!! I could just eat that and be happy. Also, we are buying the turkey tomorrow and Ive been reading that there is a shortage and the prices are higher because of the avian flu that killed millions of turkeys earlier...does anyone know if its true?
I heard it was true in the midwest, but I havent seen it in CT. BTW, I cant wait to hear more about your daughters menu!
We will have turkey, ham and a small roast with all of the usual things like sweet potatoes and rolls. A home made apple pie would be nice but I don't know if I want to make one, it has been awhile since I pie.
Guess California should be okay then. We are still working on the menu, she is making a few changes this year except for the stuffing. Think the stuffing was a Williams Sonoma or a Bon Appetite recipe. We will also have a small ham, because the 11 year old doesnt like turkey and my daughter says he is such a good child he deserves to get that. It is true too...he is the best behaved of the 5 grandsons...shhhhh! Ruby, my brother lives in New Haven, CT...was there last summer....walked around Yale University, etc.
