Do I Start a New Thread or Post to An Old One?

Some forum owners hate it when someone posts to an old thread. Others (and sometimes the same ones) will get upset if someone starts a new thread for a topic that has already been discussed.

I would rather have one long thread on a topic than several short ones, and I don't care if it's an old thread or a new one. Nobody wants to see a bunch of threads about the same topic. At the same time, if you don't feel like searching the whole forum in order to tell whether someone has already started a thread on whatever it is that you want to talk about, just go ahead and start a new thread.

I'm not going to get upset about it either way. If, for some reason, I really think that your new thread should have been posted to an old one, I'll just merge the two, and I'll split a thread if I think that it would make sense for them to be two separate threads, but I will mostly likely leave it as it is.

When it comes to a question of starting a new thread or posting to an old one, don't concern yourself too much with the answer because it's not that big of a deal. I am mostly interested in what you have to say.

 

Since we have gained quite a few new members since I first posted this thread, I thought I would pop it up again, to reiterate my preference for longer threads, as opposed to multiple short ones on the same subject. I suppose that once the forum gets to be several years old, I might not feel the same way about having a thread that is four years old being popped back up for no apparent reason but this forum is not so old that any thread here can't be added to. If you come across a thread on a topic that you'd like to participate in, please don't worry if the thread hasn't been posted to in months.

Some forum owners want new threads, and would get upset to have a four-month-old thread popped back up, but I would much rather you post in an existing thread than start a new one on the same topic. At the same time, don't worry that I'll get upset that you weren't able to find an old thread. If I think your new thread should be merged with an existing old thread, I'll simply merge it. I'd like you to concentrate on enjoying yourself, learning something, or teaching someone else something that you have learned.

 

Since we've had several new members recently, I thought I'd bump this one up. I'd rather have one long thread than a bunch of new ones on the same subject but please don't concern yourself too much with it. I will not be scolding people for starting a new thread when there was already one on that subject, a I have seen done in other forums. If I see two threads on the same subject, I'll just merge them; it's not a big deal. I don't mind having old threads popped back up, as long as there is something new to add to it. Concern yourselves with having fun, and making conversation.

 

I don't do it often, but yes, I do that.
