I am pretty sure that I remember @Terry Page telling us that when he took the last trip to South America that it was the men there who did the knitting, and I think that he posted pictures of that, too. I kind of remember reading something about that somewhere as well; so it is apparently just whatever the customs are in the country, which crafts are done by men or by the women, and which can be shared. While it is unusual for us to see a man knitting here in the United States, I do not see any reason why it would make them “less manly”, and it is not much different from sewing or even cooking. Both of those have been accepted at the most skillful levels as being done by men for many years.
Cultural and regional customs and even stereotypes. True. Things can vary from place to place. I of coarse recommend that all start knitting.
Don't worry. Neither am I. I call my Ravelry page the "knitters wall-o-shame" Yet I have projects I've made favorited by others and one scarf has over 10 favorites. What? Something I made? I've learned to like what I make and that has not been easy. Years ago I sewed a bag and posted it on a crafting site and got a number of nice compliments. That kind of cured my loathing of my own projects and put me on the road to liking and accepting what I make. I'm knitting a wide rib scarf now and noted I made a two stitch error. I'm not going to worry about it. I was too far away form the error to want to go back and fix it. It's reversible anyway and won't be noticed by anyone but me I'm sure. So again, I accept what I make. And that's not been easy.
Thank you @Patsy Faye Kind of embarrassing but I have to say at least I'm not the only one over at Ravelry making this stuff. And it's a good way to use up left over yarns and make small fast projects.
Wow, if I was as talented as you are, I would knit too. My only attemp was an ugly scarf for my husband, it was a disaster but he loved it. (Liar)
@Chrissy Cross You are being beyond nice! Thank you. No talent needed for these things. I can't knit in the round and have ordered a book to learn. These were fun to make though and I just used yarns I had laying around except for the cake slice. I want to make another one of those actually. I need to find another covered glass display in a thrift store or something so the cats can't get to their "toys" I also want to learn to knot "short rows" I can't do those either. Personally I don't get the knit sock thing but people are sure into knitting them.
Someone taught me the basics of knitting in my younger years but I never did take to it like some do. I enjoyed cross stitching, and I still like to make baby quilts and blankets, etc. with my sewing machine.
That sounds good. I do a little cross stitching and I'm not very good at it. I like to sew. I make only very basic things. Doing crafts is fun. I don't have a dedicated sewing area in my one bedroom apartment so I have to always put everything away due to the cats.
I really like knitting socks. They are small projects, and can even be carried along if you want to take them somewhere, although now days, I usually take the Kindle and read. When the kids were younger, and we went to church every Sunday, I often took my knitting long and made socks or mittens while we listened to the sermon. Another thing that I like is making a scarf or shawl. Last year, I made Ina a shawl for Christmas, and I enjoyed making it; so this winter I made another one and gave it to a friend of mine. It was a very colorful one, and also lacy.
