It would be impossible for me to text, because thankfully, I don't own a Cellular Telephone!
Even if I did, I would certainly not use it for texting, either while driving, in a crowded shopping center, or anwhere at all.

I've seen people in various places typing out their important messages on those tiny keys, while distracting themselves in traffic, bumping into people in the mall, or risking injury while crossing streets while immersed in their vital messages. Not for me!

I have a comfortable Desktop Computer, with a spacious keyboard which I use while comfortably seated in my den. My "texting" is done on my keyboard in the style of the best form of cyber communications ever devised: EMAIL!

    Y'all take care now...hear?

Looks like a great setup, @Hal Pollner , and it does exactly what YOU want it to do, and that is what is important. Each of us has our own individual needs from our electronic equipment; so what is perfect for one person would not work at all for someone else.
I don’t see the need for people to be constantly texting, or even talking on their phones all of the time; but it seems like that is the common thing to do nowdays.
As you mentioned, you see people everywhere doing one or the other of those habits, in stores, driving, or just walking down the street arguing at the top of their lungs with someone on another cellphone.
I can text/message when I need to, and it is often simpler than making a phone call; but I can do it from my iPad easier than from the iPhone.

I really enjoy that Bobby and I can relax in our easy chairs here in the living room, and we can watch movies, read a book, post on the forum, or just message friends and family and still enjoy each other’s company.
We enjoy the comfort of being close to each other, and still have everything we need when using our iPad; so for us, this kind of a setup works better than having an office with desktops set up in it.

We were eating out last week and three young people came in and sat at the table next to us. Two of them chatted as they ate. The third one, a young lady, never took her phone away from her ear while she was eating. She was talking as she sat down and still talking when she got up to go. How is it possible to chew and talk at the same time?

Uniquely exquisite OP! I, too, cannot text, even though I have a throw-away cell phone; either it, or I, is not smart enough to text.

BTW, a sage recently revealed why cell phones are so-named: because they imprison their users!

Now, I am called "glutton", after a small carniverous mammal so-named due to it's ravenous eating habits.

I can't stand people eating and talking at the same time face to face, but it's all the worse if you've got someone talking on the phone and they're slurping in my ear...disgusting and ill mannered!!

Well, well, well here, are we showing our age? Kidding, but also serious. Guess this is one of the things that we don't get along with the younger generation on.........texting and talking on a cell phone as much as they do.

My wife has done a little, very little, texting to her old supervisor. I test her brother, basically because he doesn't like talking on the phone and I have no problem texting. I also text her sister and she will text me back. Seems as if she texts other folks as well.

When wife and I are eating out at breakfast or dinner, I may use my iPhone to check the weather or something and wife may play a game until the meal comes. Sometimes she will be playing one of her games as we leave our apartment to go somewhere and I will say to her "watch where you are walking, I don't want to run into something".

We all have to understand that we are living in an entirely different generation than years ago, before cell phones and iphones came into being. Today I would never expect a small group of teens to sit down in a restaurant to eat and talk to each other. For the most part, that's just isn't what teens and a little older do today. One thing for sure, we can't change the way it is.

I text more than call, which irritates my hubby. But, texting is the is best in most cases. You can answer a text, if and when you feel like it.
If the phone is ringing until answered that can get on your nerves. But there are instances where to me texting is a flat..NO.
When a person in the the family has died, or been injured badly, that requires a phone call to me. When something of a very personal matter
is going on, I think a phone call is best.
I do think more manners should be in place when using the phone. If you go to see someone, or they come to see you, put that phone down!
Aside form using phone while waiting at a doctors appt. I put mine down. and I do not talk or text while driving !

Yep I text more often than I call...but I'd never sit at a dinner table in a restaurant or at home and text anyone unless it's urgent...

Sorry Cody.... I think we're all up to speed here when it comes to most technology...many of us younger than you and your wife..but I don't feel it necessary to be playing a game on my phone as I'm walking along to the detriment of my safety... in fact I'd never play a game on my phone unless I was sitting waiting for an appointment and to pass the time. Playing phone games while walking really is something that separates the adults from the kids...

I rarely text anyone. It comes in handy when I am on my land up north though. The mountains and the trees reduce my signal so that I can generally not get a signal good enough to call out or receive calls but, for some reason, I can usually text.

When we had the bad tornadoes here a few years back, we could text several days before so could actually make a phone call. A text connection only needs to last a few seconds, whereas a phone call needs to last at least a minute or more. So when the signal is very poor, you can write out your text and then send it because the connection only needs a few seconds.

This is actually another very good reason to have a phone with texting capabilities, just in case of an emergency where you can’t make a phone call. In disasters that affect large areas, the phone lines will all either be down or tied up if they work at all, so being able to send a text for help, or to let someone know that you are okay, could be a very important thing in an emergency situation.

I only have an old "flip" phone, but I do text for many of the reasons listed on the thread. Texting requires less bandwidth and weaker signal, can be answered when convenient, and attachments can be sent with texts. The main reason that I don't have a smart phone is that I can't deal with virtual keyboards with my stubby, fat fingers. I suppose the "addiction" thing is in the back of my mind as well. My old phone take pictures fine, too, but I can't do much but store them or send them as attachments to texts. I can send email but it doesn't work very well.

No texting from my old phone; it can't be done. I do text from my iPad on IMessage.

I don't text either. I don't need that internet connection 24/7. I think it's ruining lives. I spend too much time on the computer as it is!

It's a problem at work also with people looking at their phones to much and it's even caused me issues when at my last job my boss wanted texts only after 9 so the kids wouldn't be woke up. The couple of times I asked people to text her for me, they never sent what I asked them to though I think that was not a difficult task. I finally would just borrow their phone and text it myself.
