Here comes summer. And I don't like it. Plus I'm in an upstairs apartment and the AC unit is as old as this apartment I'm sure. Over 25 years. It doesn't work great. Plus it's loud. Luckily I don't get the afternoon sun so that helps. I'm still looking for a mobile in a park and if I ever find one and the AC is old, I'm replacing it. Oh yeah. Fans. So do they do any good? I've heard they really don't. I'm looking at some bladeless ones. I couldn't have anything else with wild tigress tabby here. She misses nothing and gets into everything. Those Dyson are expensive and from the sound I've heard the "whirl" is kind of high pitch. That's the first time I ever heard of bladeless fans. I wonder how they work? I use a box fan in my utility room in the summer. With the water heater, freezer, washing machine and dryer all going, it heats up the room. I bought the fan at Dollar General for about $20. I put it near the AC vent and it does a great job.
I use fans in the summer. If you're looking for low temperatures, they don't replace an air conditioner but they sure do make high temperatures more livable.
We don't have enough warm days to make AC necessary, but we do use fans--both in the winter to circulate warm air and in the summer to have a cooling effect. We have a couple ceiling fans (if you are renting probably not practical) as well as box fans. The box fans do make a difference in the way you feel in the summer, and you can make a "swamp cooler" with them if you know how. I know about the bladeless fans--I think they rely on laminar flow of air--but they are so pricey that I can't bring myself to purchase one. I would love to try them out, however, especially those that also work as air filters.
@Shirley Martin apparently the expensive Dyson has a ban in the base and then blows the air out. I think they can be noisy. They are also very expensive. I have also read that a fan can actually slightly raise the temperature in a room. I have a ceiling fan in the bedroom but it's cheap, clicks and isn't worth using. I don't know if they are good at pulling in cool air from outside like if you put them in front of a door.
@Don Alaska I certainly wouldn't mind a cooler climate. But you have the winter extremes. I just wish I had a better AC unit. I am limited in how I can keep windows open at night also due to the tabby.
@Kitty Carmel , if you put them in a window, cover the rest of the window, turn them so they are blowing out, open a window at the other end of the house, they will draw cool air all the way through the house. I do that sometimes in the spring and fall.
That's what I would hope for @Shirley Martin Wonder if it would scare the cats? Maybe enough to at least keep my tabby away from it. That would be good.
I like using a window fan set to blow air out of the room. In combination with another fan that seems to keep air circulating nicely.
I like the idea of the whole house fan although I don't know exactly how they work or how complicated they are to install. My understanding is they pull the cool air from outside in. When I had the prestigious job of working in a nursing home laundry, there was a fan that pulled the air from outside in and really helped cool the room. This worked well except the two hot months in Washington state. It was in the ceiling and you could hear it but it wasn't real loud. And it cooled fast.
I have a dear friend who spends April through October here, then heads to Arizona for November through March. She has the best of both worlds.
I agree, but even if they do not get you one, you can always get one of the small window units and put it in the room you use the most. We have a large central heat and air unit here in our house, but it really does not do much for either heating or cooling, even though Bobby has worked on it several times. We use small window units in the living room and in the bedroom, one for the day and the other when we go to bed. I also have a small fan that is right beside the bed that blows air in my face at night and helps me to breathe better. Putting a portable fan in front of the AC unit might help to distribute the air better and that would help keep the apartment cooler as well.
That would be nice. And thanks for saying it. I did use the AC a little yesterday. I works but it's not like a nice new unit would be. With any luck and hope I wish to find a place of my own and will move. But who knows. I leave the AC on even when not home for the cats of coarse.
