Has anyone else caught this idiot in the news. He wants people to send part of their social security to him so he can live like a king. Errr, spread the word. He probably needs the jet to fly bibles to Muslims.

Between my recent encounter with the cat organization, these mailings of my stepfather and more, I'm done with donating. And I don't plan to again.

The days of the Bakers are not over.

That's what televangelism is all about. Fleecing money from their listeners or viewers, living high on the hog.

Yes it is. I was donating to an organization that helped wild cats. The facility and areas provided looked really nice. Then I found articles on the internet about misappropriate of funds by the people who run it. Buying personal items including clothing and other items. I wrote them and asked to stop all mailings and e mail, I wouldn't donate again. Breaks my heart really. I care about those cats. It seems every time I try to do something to help, it bites me back and just turns negative. Can't trust anyone.

Are you suggesting that it wasn't a good idea for me to send him money?

Memories of Reverend Ike, the original shyster preacher (prosperity gospel evangelist). I don't think he had a plane, but he sure had some nice cars, and then there were Jim and Tammy Faye.... I think Jesus probably would still be riding a donkey. Jesus didn't try to reach the entire world (Roman Empire), but he assigned folks like Paul to do it for him.

According to Revelation when Jesus comes back it will be on a white horse. He doesn't need the latest Jet plane to travel...and neither does Jesse Duplantis! He's from Louisiana but please don't think all our Shepherds for Jesus' Church are just like him...because they aren't. Like every other State in America we have some real Servants of God...and some who serve only theirselves. He's already had two jets...I hope people aren't foolish enough to buy him a third one.

I think I'm going to send him an email and tell him my twin nephews who have autism need a Service dog and that dog will cost $30,000.00 and that God TOLD ME if Jesse Duplantis pays for the 7 year old twins Service Dog...then God will bless Jesse's old Jets so they will get him wherever God wants to send him.

If he really works the system that he and the Copelands (and others) preach, he could send you the 30K and by his own words, God will enrich him by 100 fold. Then, if he did that a couple more times he would have his jet money.....
Uh....I am definitely NOT going to hold my breath for that to happen...…………...

It just isn't right for someone who calls himself a Shepherd of God's flock....to fleece them! :(

That's funny. I was composing an opening post for a thread on the Reverend Ike before I saw that you had brought him up here.

I debated with myself over whether to post this in the religion or the entertainment section of the forum, because the Reverend Ike was entertainment for me. Then I noticed that Don had brought him up here, so I figured I'd just post it. If it turns into an extensive discussion of Rev. Ike, I'll separate the Rev. Ike posts into another thread.

The Reverend Ike wasn't on any of the radio stations where I lived but I would catch him often while traveling through other states, and he was fascinating.

He was the first send-me-your-money preacher who I had come across, at least who went well above passing an offering plate around during the worship service.

The other interesting thing I found was that, in a time before I could look something up on the Internet, and on a media (radio) where I couldn't see the speaker, I thought he was a Southern white guy, maybe because it was on the Southern stations that I would come across him.

Of course, I would only catch him in spurts, before I traveled out of the range of whatever local radio station I had tuned into.

But, far from being a Southern white guy, he was a black guy whose ministry was based in New York City. He was born in North Carolina, however.

Ike had some good things to say, and he wanted people to do things for themselves instead of the waiting for the government to do things for them. I don't believe his motives were pure, however.

I have never and will never trust any so call tv ministers. I use to like Joyce Myers...but her head too swoll up snd appears to have a not so good face lift of sorts. A jet at that cost- could feed, cloth.and house an entire small country.
Then his name could be known and the Word would spread.

Television evangelists and mega-church pastors are usually slick, dynamic speakers, who begin with a way with words and eventually develop an efficient staff that keeps things running smoothly, at least until a combination of ego and greed brings them down. Without denying the existence of someone with a huge following and budget who may be on the up and up, many of them are simply good at what do. They could have gone into politics instead, and the percentages of mega-church pastors and politicians who are sincere in what the do and say are comparable, I think.

Because they are such dynamic speakers, it's easy to be taken in by what they say. Their ministries may not have started out to be all about money, and some of them might even be taken in by what they say themselves. Billy Graham managed to complete a very long and successful career without gathering too many detractors, at least among Christians, and I could listen to Alistair Begg for hours on end, but I don't send him any money.

An argument could also be made that, like those in any other occupation, when an evangelist does very well, perhaps he deserves to be paid very well. Few would begrudge a pastor of a church of a hundred people earning a couple of thousand dollars a month, plus housing. That's about twenty dollars from each member of the church per month, and most people would consider that to be reasonable.

If $20 per member is a reasonable rate for a pastor, then the pastor of a church with a membership of 2,000 would take in $40,000 a month; with a membership of $5,000, that would be $100,000; and the pastor of a church with 20,000 members would rake in $400,000 a month, and that's approaching $5-million a year. Plus, they sell stuff. It could also be argued that a pastor who has managed to assemble a church membership of 20,000 is much better at his job than the pastor of a church with 100 members. I don't believe so, which is why I generally attend churches with fewer than a hundred people in the pews, but then I wouldn't describe the pastors I have had as being dynamic speakers, as compared with Billy Graham or Alistair Begg, either. I look for something different, is all.

True enough, no one needs to take in that kind of money. However, what are we paying professional baseball players? Football players? What do the CEOs of large companies earn? So it could be argued that they earn a huge amount of money because they are hugely good at what they do?

I have a relative who sends a weekly tithe to a radio preacher. He never sets foot inside a church. I wonder if he thinks he can buy his way into heaven.
