I just looked and he's not there but Pickles is antsy. Runs to the front door and barks, I look out my peephole and there is nobody there..not even on the street. Then he went to the back patio door and started barking...nobody there either...he's definitely on edge.
Here he is listening! He's on the recliner next to me in this pic and he's usually stretched out and seldom puts his head on the arm rest.
They will do that when it is hot....staying close to the ground maybe gives them some relief from the heat.
My squirrels will sometimes tap on the window now if the feeder is empty. Clearly, they know that I am feeding them. If I hold out a handful of peanuts, the squirrel's eyes will get big, obviously aware that I am probably going to give him some peanuts. Still, when I open the window to put the peanuts out, the squirrel will jump to the tree as if I was going to kill him.
When we lived in Jacksonville, FL my Honey "trained" a Squirrel to come and eat peanuts right out of his hand. Every day when he came home from work and sat out on the porch/patio he would start a trail of peanuts that the Squirrel would eat, moving that trail closer to our porch/patio every few days until he had the peanuts right on the porch/patio and when that Squirrel got used to eating the peanuts right in front of my Honey, then after a few days my Honey put the peanuts in his hands and with patience the Squirrel finally started eating them right out of his hand. I even have pictures of this somewhere.
I think my squirrels could be persuaded to do take peanuts out of my hand if I were outdoors more. They recognize the peanuts when I have them in my hand and will move toward the window. But the opening of the window scares them, and they jump to the tree.
Yes, I believe they could to Ken. My Honey has a lot of patience and it took time, patience, and waiting quietly for that Squirrel to trust him enough to eat those peanuts out of his hand. But once that trust came...the Squirrel was pretty much there every day eating peanuts out of my Honey's hand.
