I've only had it in Hungary. We went from fruitcake to blood sausage, lol....sorry Yvonne. Even hot and cold popsicles.
I loved fruitcake when I was little. It always was the dessert that was the loneliest because no one ever touched it. I always wondered why buy or make it if no one is going to eat it? In my teens I specifically wanted my own fruitcake and purchased one. Not as I remembered it. I continue to try them when they are around hoping I'll find that 'special' one. Oh yeah, I do remember picking out those red and green pieces they make the cake look pretty but didn't have any taste to them. What would be a good edible substitute for them, I wonder.
I remember we had a kind of backup cake after Christmas day, it was called a Dundee (Scottish traditional) covered in almonds, I always found it too dry.
I loved most fruitcakes I've had. My aunt's was lighter and soaked in whiskey, but rum, brandy or whatever is good. I think the more booze in it, the better the cake. *hic*
♥~" Fruitcake originated in ancient Egypt and was considered an essential food for the afterlife. There are those who think that is the only thing they are good for".
In the olden days, we would receive fruit cakes for Christmas and we would be having fruit cake for snacks until the middle of January. But in the recent years, it looks like the popularity of fruit cake is waning. It is way too expensive compared to other pastry products. What's getting in fashion are the small cakes. This Christmas, a colleague gifted me with a classy fruit cake packed in an elegant can. My husband said that we would be eating it in the middle of January when all the gifts were opened and the holiday foods are all eaten. Right now we still have some leftover fruits from the new year table.
There are some versions of the fruit cake that are good or decent as some have illustrated here. However, the original kind with that candy fruit is something I wouldn't eat. I know for a fact I am not along in this. I still wonder why this type of fruit cake is still made. It's like people make them but no one wants to eat them.
I don't mind fruitcake. It's not something I would buy or eat on a regular basis but if someone gives me fruitcake once a year at Christmas, I don't mind eating it. Some of it tastes pretty good.
There's no shortage of fruitcakes where I live, but none of them are edible. Not unless you're a cannibal...
I always liked fruitcake, even the cheapo's you buy in convenience stores. I never got any this year. Guess I'll check online and see if there's any left over.
A Fruit Cake is one of our family's favorite festive food that should be serve on the dining table during Christmas Eve for our Noche Buena. We always buy this kind of cake in a famous bakeshop in our place and it is really delicious! But how I wish that I can bake it on my own for my family.
I love fruitcake, but being diabetic cannot have it but rarely and then only a small slice. A number of years ago, I found a sugar free fruitcake at Krogers and bought several and popped them into the freezer. I was happy to have fruitcake for several months. It did not sell well so it was no longer carried at Christmas. I have bought the Italian Panatone at Christmas time. It is not as dense or sugary as a regular fruitcake and does not have a much fruit or nuts in it, but is still good.
Fruitcake is in the stores, and I bought us a small one for the holiday season. I am not going to say for Christmas, because we are already having some tonight. If it goes on sale after the holidays, I will get more and freeze it because both Bobby and I love fruitcake. Of course, it is one of those foods that you need to have already had a meal before you eat the fruitcake, because it is so rich and a little piece is more than enough.
