On this day, December 16, in 1971, Don McLean had a major break in the industry when he released the 8+ minute version of his song “American Pie.” The song was initially inspired by Don’s memories as a paperboy in 1959 and by Buddy Holly’s death. It is partly biographical and partly the American story from the 1950s to 1980s. It represents the evolution of popular music and politics by shedding the lightness of the 1950s to the darkness of the late 1960s. They sold Tuesday at an auction in New York for $1.2 million. The name of the buyer was not released. The 16 pages include the original working manuscript and typed drafts of the song. The 8-minute-long song was released in 1971. It was a No. 1 U.S. hit for four weeks in 1972. It’s now considered one of the most recognizable songs of the century.
