My mother always had the wireless on, and she would listen to a show in the morning called Housewives choice, and this was the Theme tune to it... It always makes me smile on the very rare occasion I hear it these days ..and another was this one
Remember the orlon pullover cardigans of the late 50's that were so fine knit, if you had a hangnail, they would pull. Of course if one of those pulls happened you told you mother you'd rather be dead than get caught wearing it. I quickly learned that kind of drama didn't go over well. They all looked alike and came in about 3 colors, so you had to dress them up to be different. With beaded collars And sweater "guard" clips for the open front ones
No I didn't have one, but sometimes I would get to use my friends' pogo stick. I didn't have many toys, but I did get a Hula Hoop once, I loved that...
A String Ray bike from the local Western Auto store in Panama City, Florida. Remember my dad had just got back from a 'cruise' and was setting up to be a Navy Recuriter for the area. One saturday, he took me down to pick it out right before my birthday. It was my first real bike and I rode that thing EVERYWHERE! Called it 'Mercury' after the "Mercury Seven". ( mine was a red one )
One summer my father bought a big load of fill dirt and had it dumped in the back yard. My neighbor and I (ages about 6) played on that pile of dirt off and on all summer. Good to find out now we were normal: . Three Ways A Dirt Pile Is Better Than Toys
Really great bike. Wish I'd have had one. They were soon exported to Europe and some lucky ones got them as presents even behind the wall. So I saw them as a young lad as well but never rode it. Must have been a great feeling. Over here those bikes were call "Bonanza" bikes after one of the manufacturers.
There once was a guy who would roll a cart around my old neighborhood, and sharpen knives or scissors on site right out of his cart. He would ring a little bell so as to announce his presence. His rates were reasonable, and he put a good edge on things!
Oh I'd forgotten about him.. yes the knife sharpener would come to my grannys' house and sharpen her knives and scissors.... ..and when were kids we'd be given old rags to give to the rag & bone man, and we'd get a Balloon, or if we had a lot we'd gte a goldfish in a plastic bag , which never lived longer than a day
I got one for Christmas once but we didn't have any sidewalks, and not even many paved roads, so there wasn't much I could do with it.
Thanks @Holly Saunders for posting this. I researched 'Rag and Bone man' and to my surprise came across the sitcom " Steptoe and Son ". We, as in US TV, did a remake called " Sanford and Son " which was a big hit in the 70's. I found a lot of episodes on Youtube and will be watching them this weekend when I get a chance. What I've watched so far is very funny stuff.
yes Tim, we heard that the USA copied Steptoe and son, and called it Sanford & son.... I saw a few episodes but it wasn't as funny (sorry)... or as depressing lol.
