Bringing this back on topic, not only can I foresee a time when an avowed atheist could be elected president, but I expect there will be a time when it will be difficult for a proclaimed Christian to be elected.
I think if we could live long enough...we would see it all...including an atheist being elected President.
I often wonder how many vicars and priests weigh up the improbability of God and a hereafter and have restless nights. Conversely I wonder how many atheists doubt their own human weakness and think hard and long as they approach death.
We probably already have but the thread title mentions an admitted atheist. Self righteous people would not be likely to vote for a candidate who doesn't subscribe to their religious views. Therefore, a candidate has to profess to be a believer.
