In Britain worthless degrees, where students don't pay back their loans is running at one hundred billion pounds. This is money that could be used in our NHS.
Just curious, I'm in U.S. Even if you owe student loans here, the degree is still handed out if a student has completed the required courses. In England, they don't send out/hand over the degree until the loans are paid? In that sense "worthless"?
@Mikhail Bulgakov - is that so ? I thought the loan was repaid when they started earning a wage - so they would need the degree to attain a worthwhile income or maybe, as you say, a degree is just a piece of paper
This is the first time I have heard of that but in a way it makes a little sense. A prospective employer will know that the applicant has finished his or her post grad work and also know how they did just by checking the records. I do not know but imagine that the employer will also have to accept the responsibility for taking a certain percentage of the applicant’s pay and forwarding it to the loan provider in order for the graduate to pay off his or her loan and get the actual sheepskin. It sort of limits the jobs an applicant can attain in that, in the business and government world, if some of the information that the prospective employee is deemed to be confidential, the financial burden of paying off the loan would be taken into consideration before being hired. A prospective employee with a huge financial burden is a no-no in some circles.
Not very many courses taken for a degree are even in the broad major subject area, let alone a specific designation. I think it's generally about 25% or fewer. Sometimes a very specific degree designation just means that the student did a special project, like a research paper in that area, that amounted to one course credit. For example, a student may major in political science, or psychology, and be required to do a research paper, and they chose "Protesting." The vast majority of courses taken are from what they call the "core curriculum" that everyone takes. They are meant to give a broader education. So there isn't a huge difference between students with totally different majors, within a particular school or college.
Yeah, kinda. I’m just speculating here but it stands as a fairly good piece of visible information that says that not only has the person done the work but pays his debts as well. (?)
As a good example of “laughable degrees,” we do have a celebrity who is continually in the news nowadays by the name of A.O. Cortez. The little lady did the college work in economics, earned the degree which gave her a leg up in the election. The thing is that she knows very little about world or U.S. economics. To me, she knows less than the average American who busies themselves with maintaining a tight budget on their household or business. Now, will her degree aid her further in Congress? Maybe, if she listens to a few folks with and without degrees who know what they are talking about.
Ah yes - being a good listener - processing info - thinking outside the box - all far better qualities
I'm hoping that AOC sticks around as the standard bearer for the DNC with her GND. Rebuild every building in America, high-speed rail to Hawaii, all battery powered cars. Yep that's the ticket.
Any university course or degree that has the word [study] in it is just plan garbage. Like gender studies or black history studies. and on and on they are just made to separate people to for conflict and not for education
