I would have totally agreed with you about this, @Patsy Faye , until Bobby cooked some and I tasted it. It is somewhere between chicken and pork as far as taste goes, and is actually really good ! We had people who asked about alligator, because they had heard of people eating it; but few (if any) native Idahoans have even been close to an alligator, let alone eaten one. So, when Bobby ordered alligator and made it as one of our weekend specials, we had a lot of curious people, eager to try out “gator tail”. One family came in almost every week along with their kids, and those kids were just as excited as possible, and had something really new and different to talk about in school for Show and Tell. What I don’t like is crawfish, and I think that it is probably the way that it is seasoned and cooked. My son, Michael , cooked some that he caught from a creek, and he said they were like eating a tiny lobster; but the ones that are cooked down here in the south are boiled in a large pot with some kind of seasoning, and people eat them, head and all ........yucky ! Crawfish brains are just NOT for me.
I only ate gator tail once and it was awful, so I have never tried it again. It was in a fairly high-end restaurant in Miami, and, although it didn't taste bad, it was tough and stringy...maybe a real old animal. Kinda like swordfish. I had it once in a fancy New York restaurant--it was supposed to be their specialty. I absolutely hated it and have never tried it again. I did once catch a small gator while fishing for bass. It was only 18" to 20" long, so it probably would have tasted okay (but not much meat). I just let it go back where I caught it. People here eat salmon shark, but I don't like that either. I guess I am just too picky.
So am I Don - always have been, wish I was different @Yvonne Smith - as a child I was the gofer - wherever I lived I was asked to go for this and that One time a Greek woman said to go to the butchers and get a pound of 'brains' I wouldn't look as he took my order and ran back and handed it to her - although I wish I was more adventurous with food - there is a limit ! When me darlin' was a kiddie - his Mother asked him to get some 'errands' (shopping) she should have wrote down what she wanted, 'cos when he got there, he asked for a bag of errands !
